Parkinsonism is a diagnosis that involves a triad of stiffness, tremor, and slowness. Parkinson disease is the most common cause of parkinsonism, but there are more rare disorders, known as Parkinson Plus syndromes, that can mimic Parkinson disease and also cause these symptoms. Parkinson plus syndromes have a much more rapid course and respond poorly to medication. Typically, a trial of carbidopa/levodopa is prescribed to try to alleviate symptoms, and also as a diagnostic aid. Classic Parkinson disease usually responds quite dramatically to levodopa, while the parkinson plus disorders may not. An explanation of this approach was provided in the office.SHOW
