Dr. Nelson grew up in a small town in upstate New York, graduating from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania in 1979 with a major in Chemistry. She went on to receive her MD degree in 1983 from the State University of New York in Stonybrook, and then completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. She spent the next five years at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, completing an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency and researching interferons and cancer. Her fellowship training in Oncology was completed at Yale University in 1991.

She served as Assistant Professor and then division chief of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School from 1991 - 1999 where, in addition to caring for patients, she was actively involved in teaching medical students and residents.

Dr. Nelson is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and …Gynecologists.

Her outside interests include gardening, traveling and bicycling, including 200 and 300 mile bike fundraisers for cancer and AIDS each summer.

Dr. Nelson is such a down -to -earth, compassionate person. I was lucky to have my prior GYN, Dr. Pauline Olsen, recommend her to me.

told i needed total hysterectomy FOR CERVICAL CARCINOMA got 2nd opinion from dr. nelson her examination conclusive for localized surgery ;impeccable,following surgery no pain amazing accuracy, two years later cancer free and treated as well as all her proceedures,think she is brilliant & most humble,BEST EXPERIENCE MEDICALLY POSSIBLE great nurses very impressed, have been treated in two other hartford based hospitals and very impressed with the nursing staff at st. francis only

Dr. Nelson made my cancer experience a positive one, believe it or not. Her compassion and quiet competence made me feel so taken care of. Her tone is upbeat and I always feel like I'm her only patient.

Dr. Nelson is an excellent doctor. She answered all my questions about my diagnosis (and I had a lot) and took my concerns into consideration when deciding which path of treatment to take. She combines cutting-edge technology and old-fashioned bedside manner...a rare find!

Dr. Nelson is very professional and yet has a style that is warm and disarming. As a patient she exudes compassion and patience. She even calls at night to follow up on a test result or a surgery. She is a gift to any one traveling through the anxiety, fears and pain of difficult diagnoses.She is also very thoughtful with patient families.
