Dr. Caleb Kallen, MD, PhD

From the moment we met Dr. Kallen, we knew he was not only an amazing doctor, but an amazing person. We had come from a nearby clinic and were frustrated and unhappy with the care we'd been receiving. Dr. Kallen and Shady Grove welcomed us with open arms. We spent at least an hour with him going over our history and our options. Dr. Kallen is very informative, listens, and up-to-date on the latest studies and technologies. We never felt pressured to make any decisions. He doesn't sugar-coat things, and tells it like it is. Under his serious demeanor, there is an incredibly caring and compassionate human being. His nurse, Chrissie, is a dream to work with and you can tell that Dr. Kallen and she work great together. I'm a woman of a million questions, and they never once made me feel silly for asking those questions. They are truly invested in their patient's success. We are currently expecting our first child next spring and couldn't be more grateful to Dr. Kallen, Chrissie, and the… entire Chesterbrook team.

My first impression of Dr. Kallen was that he definitely seemed very academic, detailed and thoughtful in his counsel. He was serious, focused and introspective when we had our initial meeting with him to review the fertility basics. I was fairly confident that his years of academic training had allowed him both expertise and an appreciation for staying up-to-date on all evolving nature of fertility science and data. When he recommended doing a HSG test I did not realize how painful the experience would be for me. But Dr. Kallen performed the test himself, reassuring me at every turn and explaining what the next step would be. He continuously apologized for the discomfort, which was not entirely necessary, but so appreciated. As time went on and we initiated the laborious process of IUI monitoring I would not always see Dr. Kallen, as is common in a rotational, large group practice, but I know that the nurses would confer with him before calling with interim results. It took 2… rounds of IUI and the day we found out we were expecting, Dr. Kallen called me later in the evening to congratulate us. This was sincerely touching, both as a lifelong professional working with HCPs and physicians and as a patient because it is so rare to work with a practitioner who is so committed to helping you see good results. As the time draws near to switch to a regular OB practice I can say I have cried several times thinking about leaving the care of such a fine clinician and kind person. His knowledgeable and thoughtful approach gave me confidence in trusting his advice and his kind disposition gave me reassurance. If I could recommend Dr. Kallen to every person looking to become a parent, I would do so unequivocally and with full enthusiasm. He has my appreciation, my business and my gratitude for life.

I saw Dr Kallen for information on my PCOS and on options to initiate ovulation. He was very knowledgeable, spent time explaining all potential options, and has a kind bedside manner. The RMA office is a nice facilitiy, and anytime I contacted the office, the nurses and other staff were very kind and responsive. Overall, a very positive experience!

We couldn't be happier with Dr. Kallen. He is super informative, smart, and helpful! And all of the nurses there are amazing.

Me and my husband have been trying to conceive for about 10 years before we saw Dr. Kallen at RMA. During our first meeting with Dr. Kallen, he clearly explained our chances for conceiving without the help of egg donor through IVF. From the moment we met Dr. Kallen my husband and I felt comfortable and well informed. Additionally, the nurses and staff at RMA provide rapid, efficient care with both expertise and patience. I appreciated the close guidance they provided throughout entire treatment. Furthermore, I could not be happier with the results, we are now expecting a baby! Thanks of course to Dr. Kallen and his wonderful staff for this would not be possible without them. I would highly recommend Dr. Kallen and his staff!

I started seeing Dr. Kallen for IVF during 2013 after Jefferson Hospital changed the Doctors in the IVF program. Prior to that, I went through 3 cycles of IVF w/ Dr. Fossum from 2010-2012. My first cycle resulted in twins. However, i went into preterm labor at 22 1/2 weeks and both my son & daughter did not survive. So my husband and I tried two more times unsuccessfully. At that point, the hospital made changes in staff. So I started a new cycle w/ Dr. Kallen. Because of my previous experience. I was very stressed & overwhelmed. So we tried 3 times unsuccessfully w/ Dr. Kallen. Even though Dr. Kallen could see how hurt I was. He was still determined to help my husband & I. We were down to the last 2-3 months of insurance coverage. So it was all or nothing. Finally, it happened in May, 2014 I received a call from Dr.Kallen instead of the nurse. And he broke the news that my pregnancy test came back positive. I was soooooo excited. I couldn't believe it so I bought a test just to see… for myself. So long story short, after 7 cycles of IVF. My husband & I finally have been blessed w/ our little girl in 2015. We are so thankful & grateful for Dr. Kallen. He did an amazing job.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure where to begin. Dr. Kallen was my IVF doctor. He was referred to me by another doctor I had been seeing at Jefferson. Appointments were easy to get. While on appointments, Dr. Kallen was very imformative and positive. He had no trouble at all answering my questions (I usually had a lot of them). The nurse that worked with him was as awesome and helpful as he was. He returned phone calls promptly and made me feel like I was his only patient. He used his knowledge to make decisions for my treatment that ultimately made a difference. When it came to the retrieval and transfer, everything went as smooth as possible. There is no review I could write that would ever show how thankful I am to have been treated by this knowledgeable and wonderful doctor. He had hope for my husband and I and our situation when I had none. He gave my husband and I and our families the most perfect baby boy. I am so thankful for Dr. Kallen.

I would highly recommend Dr. Kallen. His knowledge and professionalism is stellar. He spends time answering all of your questions at every appointment, you never feel rushed. I felt comfortable and confident during the whole process. I hope every couple has a great outcome and enjoys the process as much as we did! If we decide to have more children I will be contacting Dr. Kallen.

My husband and I were treated with respect. Dr. Kallen is very knowledgeable and explained every step of the process. The nurse, (M.E.) working with Dr. Kallen is a God send! She's very passionate, personable, and makes herself available to you as needed. At the age of 26 I was told I should have a hysterectomy due to fibroids. Ten years later: 2 myomectomies, and 1 laproectomy I'm pregnant! We received treatment and was successful the 1st try. Thanks to Dr. Kallen's expertise we are expecting a baby girl this fall!

I have nothing but positive things to say about Dr. Caleb Kallen. We went through two rounds of IVF under his care. We had pretty good results with our first round, but he had the foresight to switch me to a different medication protocol and schedule for the second round, in hope of being able to bank some embryos and never have to go through a full stimulation round again. Boy were his instincts solid: we ended up with a lot of quality embryos, one of which stuck when we did our first frozen embryo transfer. I am now 12 weeks pregnant and have moved on to the care of an OB, with every reason to believe that this baby will make it to term, and that the next time we see Dr. Kallen, it will be when are ready to try another frozen embryo transfer for baby #2. But even if something happens and we lose this pregnancy, there is great comfort in knowing that we will not have to start entirely from scratch again. We owe that comfort to Dr. Kallen's wisdom and foresight. I also… felt like Dr. Kallen was really looking out for my safety and comfort because he suspected early signs of OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome) as we got close to extraction day for that second IVF round, even though I felt no different than I had during the first round. So he strongly advised that we freeze all the embryos and plan for a later frozen transfer, rather than doing a fresh transfer (because a pregnancy can make OHSS go from mild to severe, whereas OHSS generally clears up on its own by the time of menstruation). I feel like some doctors might not have caught it that early, or might have gone for a fresh transfer even with the OHSS risk, but not Dr. Kallen. And he was right: I did develop mild OHSS, but it cleared up quickly. If we had tried a frozen transfer and I had gotten pregnant, the OHSS could have become severe. He protected me from that. Dr. Kallen also performed a laparoscopic surgery on me back when he discovered that one of my fallopian tubes was swollen and filled with fluid (a condition called hydrosalpinx) that was leaking into my uterus, possibly inhibiting implantation. I was impressed that Dr. Kallen was qualified to perform this surgery in addition to everything else he does, and it was comforting to know that I would be under his care. He held my hand during the seconds before I went under, which really touched and surprised me. The surgery went well, resulting in the removal of the problem tube. It has been six months, and my scars have healed well and aren't very noticeable. In terms of personality, Dr. Kallen will comes across as very serious. And he is very efficient and does note spend time on smalltalk. But hidden beneath his serious exterior is a caring and compassionate person. Even on visits when I had to be seen by another doctor because Dr. Kallen had to be elsewhere for procedures, I felt like he was looking after me from afar. When a nurse called each afternoon after my morning monitoring/testing visits to give updates and further instructions, they would often recount notes Dr. Kallen had written or things he had said in conference, such as "Oh happy day!" when I got a positive after the frozen transfer. When a a few visits in a row had passed during which I had seen another doctor than Dr. Kallen, he called me just to check in and see how I was doing. It was a lovely surprise, and reminded me that he was still looking after me, studying my test results, keeping an eye out for what may come. And back when a most difficult phone call had to be made after my first round of IFV, the call in which I had to be informed that my hCG had dropped and I was losing the pregnancy that had resulted from that IVF round, Dr. Kallen made the call himself. It was the kind thing to do. He is a good doctor, and will take good care of you. I look forward to being in the care of Dr. Kallen again one day, when we are ready to try for a sibling for the tiny person that is growing inside me now.
