Dr. David Lewis Benkoff, MD

I have had Crohn's desease and gastro oproblems for abut 60 years now. I was a patient of Dr. Benkoff for several years until I moved to Florida in 2007 and had to go to a local gastro doctor. My problems continue but for the time I was with Dr. Benkoff I found him to be the best gastro doctor I have ever had. I only wish I could move him to Florida. I never had a problem with his staff or the doctor and found him at be very personable and pleasant. We use to argue/discuss politics all the time and we differ on our politics but I know that my main problem was resolved by him while under his care.

Dr. Benkoff is a great gastroenterologist if a patient never had to interact with him or his office staff. When I was in the OR, waiting for my colonoscopy, his nurses were very kind to me. He came in and barely acknowledged me and never spoke to them. It was all downhill from there. He redefined the word rude. I was put on medication and was having some very serious side-effects. Since it was after office hours, I spoke to my pharmacist about titrations off of it. I had only been on it 2 days. When I called his office on Monday and explained the situation his Medical Assistant started screaming at me over what I had done. She said to never come back to the office. I had severe Colitis and needed my Colonoscopy records to see another Gastroenterologist. It took me several calls and weeks to get them. During this time I suffered with severe symptoms and dehydration. He did not care. The v bright spot is I have a professional, caring gastroenterologist in Royal Oak and am… blessed. I can’t imagine anyone putting up with being treated this way by both staff and physician. I find it so in contrast with this what a physician should be.

The staff is extremely rude. The nurse actually hung up on me because I had the nerve to request a refill on my heartburn meds four days before my annual appointment. Speaking of appointments while I did go to him I insisted on getting either the very first appointment in the morning of the very first appointment in the afternoon. Apparently, I am not the only one because they would have to schedule me months out in order to accommodate this. The reason for that is because he has absolutely no respect for other people’s time. I never waited less than an hour in his waiting room and there were times that I waited for over two hours plus. I requested the meds on a Thursday and my appointment was the following Tuesday and they refused to prescribe it. I would absolutely stay as far away from this doctor and this practice as possible!! I feel like I am giving them way too much credit by even giving them one star.

As a doctor he did a good job. But it started with a nurse telling me to hurry to put on my gown because the doctor is agitated and wants to go home I was sitting there for 2 1/2 hours. Then to be insulted how the doctor talked to me. as if I was a second class citizen.

I am an 18 year patient of Dr. Benkoff. I got a laugh out of some of these reviews. Dr. Benkoff is a rock star!!!!! If you want to be properly educated by a doctor who actually listens to you, then he is your guy. I have always been willing wait as long as it takes knowing I will get the same time and attention. He is the greatest.

After four day's of trying to book an appointment I give up. This office staff has it down to a science to raise my blood pressure. How this man stays in business is beyond me. The best I could do was reach the receptionist, she transferred me to the scheduling person. That is the end of the chain. There is no one there. You give a message, no call back. Wait two day's try again, no call back. At this point I don't believe they have anyone in this position. Worst part is it took them three day's to call me back only to switch me back over to the person who still is not at her desk. That means you have to leave a message for them to call you back, of course they don't. Catch 22

I have used Dr Benkoff for my colonoscopies and have always been pleased and felt he was excellent. However I have tried for three days to make an office appointment leaving messages each day. Today I finally got a real person who was very abrupt with a chip on her shoulder. Mila felt no need to apologize for never calling me back and actually called me “aggressive” when I wanted to know what was going on. I will be calling a new gastro today as I never want to deal with such a rude receptionist again. I wonder how many other people have had this issue and never made another appointment. Dr Benkoff, if you are reading this you need to make some changes in your front office!

Dr Benkoff is the best. He is an excellent physician. His staff go the extra mile to help set up testing appointments. In years past a few physicians had "treated" me but they were incompetent and dangerous in my opinion. I have complete confidence in Dr. Benkoff.

After Dr. Benkoff sees his therapist to work on some of his mental health/anger issues, then it might be safe to make an appointment with him. Until then, be afraid, be very afraid.
