Dr. John Marcus Downs, MD

Dr. Downs literally saved my life. I was brought into the hospital with stomach pains that ended up being colon cancer (I am only 30 years old). He was extremely informative, compassionate, and cancelled the procedure until I was comfortable with it. He wasn’t pushy or annoyed with my concerns. His intern doctor Cox is also wonderful. She is EXTREMELY compassionate and wonderful bed side manners. I am eternally grateful for both of them.

I've been in awful pain for over a month now, and was referred to him for a surgery procedure. Not only has he yet to perform this procedure that will relieve me of my pain, his "pain management" plan for me is to have me take as much Advil and Tylenol as possible despite it never helping my symptoms. His staff is constantly rude and dismissive when I try to get in touch regarding my pain, saying he is unable to be reached or simply out of the office. I have never felt so humiliated and dehumanized in my life when all I want is some help for my pain.

Think about the number of people Dr Downs sees on a given day. So when any given review site only has a dozen or less reviews and they’re trending 2:1 in his favor, I wouldn’t worry too much about all the negative ones. We usually go out of our way to write a bad review, not a good one. He was referred to me by Dr Pamela Singh, an outstanding internist. She had him in mind, specifically, not just anyone at his practice (although that was an option). He’s very soft spoken and I hope that doesn’t weird people out. Imagine being in his shoes. He has been doing this for almost three decades. I highly doubt he’s anxious to see anyone’s rear end. People need to calm down and put their phobias aside. He is very cool and calm and I’ll take that over the Patch Adams approach to bedside manners. His communication is outstanding and he shows great compassion. Above all else, he appears to be a great troubleshooter, opting for low risk approaches to rule things out before considering more… invasive procedures. What else could you ask for?

Not respectful of patients' time or comfort.

I was brought in through the ER with debilitating stomach pains. After several tests were done the diagnosis was that my colon had perforated. It was about 5:00am and they called in Dr. Downs. He removed a malignant tumor the size of a baseball that had perforated through my colon. Now my whole body is sepsis. Due to Dr. Downs and his expertise and wisdom he literally saved my life. His surgical skills and knowledge far surpass other doctors in this field. He is very well respected from everyone at the hospital. He performed my surgery in a way where I would be able to go back to living life normal instead of having my entire colon removed therefore being stuck with a colostomy bag for the rest of my life. When he is with you whether it be an office visit or hospital visit he gives you his full attention. Doesn't just run in and out like some doctors just to say they saw you. In his office he sits right in front of you and answers all questions no matter how long it takes. His nurse is… in the background taken notes on the computer. It's so perfect because he truly cares about making you feel comfortable and answering all of your questions. He's laid back and has a soft spoken voice. Dr. Downs is truly a God Send. I was within minutes of losing my life and I owe it to him and God that I am still here.

Dr. Downs provided the answers I needed. He seriously gave me my life back. He and his staff were wonderful from diagnosis to recovery. I was treated at Presby during the EBOLA crisis last year. I can't express the wonderful care I received from everyone involved. A year later, and I am going strong!

Total jerk. Extremely rude. Horrible bedside manner. Complete inability to communicate, no communication skills. Do not recommend this dr. to anyone.

My appointment was at 11 a.m., they escorted me to a room over an hour later. I asked the lady if it was typical for him to run so late and her answer was "yes" I said well I'll just arrive an hour later than when I am scheduled so He'll be on time and her answer was, "You will still have to wait" ... what?!!! She could have been nicer about his delay rather than taking a snippy attitude!
