Dr. John Waldron Mccahan, MD

I had an unfortunate meeting with Dr. McCahan when he was assigned to me while I was hospitalized in Bozeman. I have an autoimmune disease with primary hypogammaglobulinemia, CKD, and chronic pericarditis. Because of my poor immune system, I suffer frequent infections. I was hospitalized after a long stint on IV antibiotics, then I went mildly septic and had a fungal sinus infection. The "Vfend" was causing my heart to go in & out of SVT while hospitalized. This Dr. had the nerve, at such a low point in my health, to question things about my health & what was causing it. He didn't listen to my me, interrupted and said "tell me about your childhood." I'm a woman, do you think he would've done that to a man! The nurse over heard our conversation, and slipped me a note afterwards with name & number for Dr. Reilly (the other rheumatologist at Bozeman Health.) The nurse was upset & apologized for his behavior. As soon as I was discharged, my husband got me in the car & drove me to the Mayo… Clinic where my team of specialists were. I was at the Mayo for weeks. Bless the doctors there! Thank God I know what good doctors are like. I can only image the psychological damage Dr. McCahan has done to patients who are just beginning to seek help, and sadly come across this doctor first. If you ask me, he's a lazy, frustrated rheumatologist who's a wanna be psychiatrist. If I can save one person from this man, then this post is worth it.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. My experience was very similar to the person below. He is condescending did not take the time to listen and I felt like my symptoms were downplayed to fit into a convenient box of being depressed. This is certainly not how someone should be treated when their body suddenly decides to fall apart.

He takes time to treat me as a whole person, not just my arthritis! He is also the only doctor in Montana who is knowledgeable about a rare genetic condition I have.

I normally don't write reviews, but after reading the only negative review on this site, I am compelled to give others a true representation of him. I have had RA and fibromyalgia for years, so I have seen several rheumatologists along the way. Many of them were excellent doctors, but until I started seeing Dr. McCahan, I never felt that any of them understood pain. In my opinion, his accident made him able to sympathize with his patients. Also, when I came to Bozeman, I was in bad shape. Although it's been a slow process, he has finally got me to healthier point and decreased my medication as well. Wow! You won't find a better or more compassionate doctor in Montana. His nurse (Colleen) is equally caring and compassionate, as is the office staff.

I scheduled my appointment weeks in advance. The office called the day before and had to move the time because of a staff meeting!! Dr. McCahan was condescending, did not listen and did not know what he was talking about. Told me he definitely did not think I had an auto-immune disease and then called me back after the blood tests came back and had to recant his opinion. Even after the blood tests confirmed an auto-immune process he still did not seemed to want to listen to my symptoms.
