When my mother was diagnosed, and we brought up getting a second opinion, he suggested we "could" see another doctor but that would delay treatment and it was important to get started right away. That should have been clue number one. After multiple chemo treatments, the doctor reported that the chemo treatments were shrinking her tumors and that he could now change the treatment to another "maintenance" type. When I asked why change a treatment when it was being effective, he gave an answer that seemed to make sense. But in hindsight, it doesn't make any sense at all to change a treatment that was having an effect. Right then I should have brought her to someone else. Then when the change in treatment was crippling her and we asked is it prudent to continue the treatment, his response was yes. My mother trusted this doctor; she liked him a lot. She is now in hospice mere days from dying. So the doctor billed insurance $200k and now she will be gone. Physicians should have to repay insurance companies if their treatment fails... doesn't that make sense? And the only ones who were truly caring were the nurses and PCT's (i.e. the lower paid staff - what a bunch of rubbish)
