Dr. Cheng's clinical interest is in all aspects of spinal surgery such as treating degenerative disease, deformities, trauma, tumors, and spinal cord injury, with an emphasis on complex spinal reconstruction and instrumentation. He completed his Neurosurgical training and continued on for a one-year Fellowship in Complex Spinal Surgery. During that time, he has also received a Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering with a special emphasis in spinal biomechanics and modeling. His research interests include spinal biomechanics and modeling, spinal oncology, spinal reconstruction and instrumentation, and minimally invasive spinal techniques. Dr. Cheng currently serves as Assistant Professor and Director of the Neurosurgery Spine Program at Vanderbilt University.

Dr Cheng pretends to be your surgery but does not show up. Interns and residents perform the surgery and even when complications arise he lies to you and your family about having to be resuscitated. He had a great bed side manner but do not be fooled. He is a liar and does not care for his patients during or after surgery. Your life is in your own hands, he cannot be trusted.

Dr. Cheng was able to perform a revision on me from a previous surgery which left me with a broken spacer that had migrated causing horrible pain. My vertebrae was being crushed like soft wood from the spacer. I had a list of questions when I saw Dr. Cheng and he answered all of them and more without me asking. He explained all of the risks to me, the procedure and showed me what he was going to be doing on the images we had. I went into the 6 hour surgery and can now say that I have my life back. The care at UC was top notch. He called me personally after my surgery a few times to see how I was doing and his NP Amy is also very professional and helpful. He was able to fix the mess that was in my back so that I am no longer walking 500 steps a day, off of work due to pain and hopeless. I am now back to exercising, even running and I am back to work. Thank you Dr. Cheng!!

Dr. Cheng fixed my back problems. He corrected the incorrect spinal fusion done by another surgeon and relieved my pain. The the cats best! I highly recommend him.

Dr. Cheng did a spinal fusion on my back one year ago. He had done a previous surgery on me in 2011. Although I now live in Texas, when I needed surgery again in 2014 I traveled back to TN. For him to do my second surgery. I think Dr. Cheng is an excellent surgeon. I now can do things that I haven't been able to do in the last 15 years. My over all health has improved so much since he did surgery on my back. I would highly recommend Dr. Cheng to anyone in need of back surgery. If I ever have to have another back surgery, I would come back and have Dr. Cheng do it in Nashville.

Dr. Cheng did a 7 hour surgery that was very complex, due to my underlying ankylosing spondylitis. My surgery was planned to be 3 hours, but he spent a lot of extra time ensuring it was safe to proceed with the operation. He is very compassionate and very patient even with a hard to please patient like me who asks 10,000 questions. His technical skills are also top notch. He recognized that I needed some additional work and he put in the extra time to do it.

A failed fusion by another physician with no hope for improvement. Dr Cheng removed the debris and improved my quality of life totally. a great listener -- a great engineer and fantastic surgeon. Best doctor I have ever experienced. Not easy to get in to see; but well worth the wait
