Dr. Karen L. Hiotis, MD

I would give her zero stars but that was not an option. I believe she is incompetent. She showed no interest in me and spent less than 5 minute with me. I came in because of breast pain, she didn't even examine the correct part of my breast, did not bring in any x-rays to go over, and told me often pain in one area of your body will manifest in another. I think she was disappointed because (knock wood) I wasn't actually ill. I was so shocked at her treatment and lack of care, I failed to question her further before she left. Upon leaving her office, I was stopped by a staff member and handed a business card with a label affixed to the back of it that told me to buy primrose oil. Had she read my chart, she would have seen I'm on HRT, and when I looked it up online, unfortunately after I purchased it, primrose oil is contraindicated for HRT. I told them I thought my visit was substandard and they better not bill Medicare. They did, one charge for a patient visit and one charge… for a hospital charge. I was in a small exam room. Also, her office does not tell you that her location on East 34th Street is a hospital location and that insurance, in my case Medicare, is double billed, resulting in two co-pays. I am currently in dispute with NYU over the co-pay charge since January 2025. In the paper work you need to sign ahead of time, it does say you may have a hospital charge, but you can't annotate the document online. From now on, I will not assume any of their locations are not hospital affiliated and will print out the form and cross out 'hospital' and then give it to the office on any next visit I have. Steer clear of her.

I went to see Dr. Hiotis regarding a twisting, wringing pain I had for over a week. My visit with her lasted about 5 minutes, and that is a generous estimate. She came in unprepared, and it became obvious she did not look at my medical records, nor did she bring in any x-rays. She said often a problem in another area of your body can manifest elsewhere. She then left the exam room. I was so unnerved by this treatment, I didn’t call her back for any further explanations. I felt she had no interest in my problem as I wasn’t (knock wood) actually sick. I got dressed and upon leaving the office, I was stopped by a member of the staff, and I was given a business card with a label affixed to the back to take Primrose oil. I believe she did not read what medications I'm on, as I looked up Primrose oil online, unfortunately after I bought it, and it said it is contraindicated to a medication I take. I’ve never had such substandard care by a physician. I've had better care at City MD.

I am so happy to have been under Dr. Hiotis's care for two breast lesions. She has a lovely bedside manner and put me at ease the moment she walked into the room. Her entire staff at NYU is so professional and friendly. I highly recommend Dr. Hiotis and her team.

Great doctor. I highly trust her opinion. Even though my insurance does not cover NYU any longer I am returning for her opinion.

Dr. Hiotis is an experienced breast surgeon who exudes professionalism. She has a gift most surgeons don't possess. She is able to place herself in her patient's shoes . Overall, a very good experience with this breast surgeon.

Dr. Hiotis is a very caring person and, a wonderful surgeon! Having gone through a trying time after a Stage 0 DCIS diagnosis, she very carefully explained what she had to do and walked me through it. She did a wonderful job and put me at ease. Her staff is equally as nice. Would highly recommend!

Dr. Hiotis is an outstanding surgeon, an excellent diagnostician and a delightful person. She is very down to earth and so far has been correct in all her assessments and evaluations. She is a bit of a whirlwind energy wise yet very thorough and precise. She exudes confidence and has an upbeat attitude. I feel very lucky to have found her!
