Dr. Pollard-Please take a few minutes and read this: I have been an RN for 30 years, working mostly in pediatric dialysis. In 2014 my daughters lost their father unexpectedly, and it sent them into a suicidal depression. I was living in KY at the time and they were in FL. I knew I had to move to be near them. I went to FL and secured a position at St Mary's Med Cntr in Palm Beach Gardens. My last day at my previous job in KY was June 25, 2014, and I was to start at St Mary's in July 2014. Two days after my last day at work I slipped and missed the last 4 stairs while moving boxes down the stairs. Within 30 seconds my left ankle was bigger than my knee. The ER at St Elizabeth's x-rayed it and there were no breaks. I had 3 days left of insurance and could not afford the 1900 per month COBRA fee, as I was moving. I was unable to walk and was rendered to a crawl. I got to FL and was unable to pass my employee physical, as I could not stand. I spent 4 months in FL trying to secure work while so badly injured, to no avail.
I ended up having to move to my parents in NJ, at the age of 52. I have not been able to stand on my ankle or knee for more than 30 minutes at a time since the fall. I have pain in my left foot, and my left knee. The muscle spasms in my ankle, the top of my left foot, the medial aspect of my inner left calf, my ileal psoas, my knee and my thigh muscels, I have inflammation coming from the ischial spine which makes it difficult to sit.....Dr Pollard, all these spasms happen day and night. I experience pain in my knee and ankle even after having been in bed for several hours. I have pain and spasms while standing and while sitting .....even when laying flat. I share this with you in hope that you will have more compassion toward me. I have not been able to work as an RN since my injury. I do not want pain medicine. I am sincerely asking for your help. I will deal with the pain. Please help heal my left leg, ankle and knee.
Sir, what would your life be like if you found yourself with a severe hand injury, or eye injury, and you did not have insurance to cover it? How would your life carry forward if you could no longer work as a MD? What would the financial and emotional and physical sequelae be for you and your family?
Sir, I need your help most desperately. Your desire, willingness and assistance in my care will have huge ramifications in my life and possible your own. Please treat me as you would treat a very dear loved one who was coming to you in such dire need. I want and need to be able to go back to work. My ankle and my knee need to be repaired. When I met you at my appointment with you yesterday I felt you were minimizing my experience and were dismissive. I left my visit with you feeling as if you thought my injuries were all imaginary. I reject the invalidation. My injuries are real Dr Pollard. I will get the MRI of my knee, and somehow, I will get an MRI of my injured ankle. I have at least 20 more years of work left in me, and need to get my independence back. I need a home and an income again.
Please take the time to listen to your patients. I was feeling very vulnerable and came to you for help. I left broken hearted. Being fully present and hearing your patients as they share with you the repercussions their injury has had on their lives would be very healing. We want and need to be heard, validated and to trust that our injuries will be tended to by a physician with sincerity, genuine compassion and great skill.
I will do the physical therapy as you prescribed, and will see you for another appt in 2 weeks. I pray that you our next encounter will be more reassuring to me of the quality of care I expected from you as the esteemed MD the plaques in your office claim you to be.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
