Dr. Matthew P Abdel, MD

If I could select zero stars I would. I’ve been receiving excellent care for a complex orthopedic issues, as a result of a car accident where I had an acetabular hip fracture and open book pelvic fracture, from Mayo for 20 years. My doc retired and I was reassigned to Dr Abdel, he mocked my pain did not listen to my past treatments, ordered duplicate diagnostic tests and suggested steroid shots that I told him and his fellow that I had already tried. I went to get the steroid injection with the Mayo Clinic anesthesiologist who took one look at my x-rays and told me the injection he was recommending could not be completed due to a fused joint. I told Dr Abdel this myself and the anesthesiologist called him to see if he was sure he wanted this and to explain it was impossible and useless due to the fused joint. He insisted the doc go through with it. Surprise! It had zero benefit and when I noted this, he released me as a patient. I filled out an eval after the visit when asked by mayo… 2 years later. Would rather drag myself to the grave than see this doc again! Thankfully John Hopkins and Cleveland Clinic docs both were compassionate and had real solutions further to travel but worth it to skip being mocked by a megalomaniac!

Dr Matthew Abdel did my 4th left knee replacement. I went to Mayo as he was highly recommended. I had adhesions and heterotypic ossifications and my tibial implant had loosened, sinking over 1 cm and causing type 3 bone loss. Dr. Abdel is the leader in researching and treating these complications. The surgery was more complicated and longer than expected but Dr. Abdel literally worked miracles. He rebuilt the tibia where the bone was eroded (like a hollowed-out funnel) and replaced the loose implant with a new implant. He also identified that my patellar tendon was thinned at the tibial tubercle and immobilized my knee to prevent it tearing. After 3+ years of agonizing pain feeling like a blowtorch inside my shin, the blowtorch is gone. I never thought the pain would go away and was terrified I would be a lifelong cripple and in constant pain. Dr Abdel is not just an amazing surgeon, but his kindness and care was reassuring. Evenings and weekends he came every day, often… multiple times a day, to check on me and answer questions, even caming Saturday morning on his way to the airport to examine my new severe allergic reaction to surgical adhesive and explain how they were addressing it. It is now almost 3 weeks post surgery and I have minimal incisional pain, mostly due to the newly developed allergy. No complication prevented Dr. Abdel from fixing my knee and he is very optimistic that I will be walking fine and pain-free after physical therapy. Dr Chen is studying as a fellow on Dr Abdel's service, and I was incredibly lucky to have them both as my surgeons, and I know Dr Chen will also soon be a leader in orthopedic surgery. Dr Abdel and his whole service have been professional, skilled, patient, and compassionate from start to finish and I recommend Dr Abdel very very highly! His education, training, honors, and experience leave no doubt that he is at least one of the best orthopedic surgeons in the world, if not the best {I am 100% sure he was the best for my specific situation}. Trust me, he is worth the wait to see him and at least have him review your situation. I will never let anyone else operate on my joints!

Great Doctor and amazing human! Dr. Abdel exhibits a great level of empathy for patients.

Not only is he rude, he gets his charting wrong so it makes you look bad to other medical professionals.

It is not possible to provide a better hip replacement experience. Dr Abdel and his team at Mayo are simply best in class.
