Dr. Marcangelo is by far the most helpful and knowledgeable psychiatrist I have experienced as a patient. He is an active listener and has excellent bedside manners. I have a complex situation but he provided me an excellent med on the first attempt.

Did not appreciate his supercilious attitude one bit.

When facing the upset and grueling decisions surrounding an organ transplant, keep in mind that YOU have the right to choose your own qualified psychiatric care provider to evaluate you; as part of the fulfillment of the transplant work up process at The University of Chicago. You are not obligated to accept their directed care. Ask your primary care physician for a recommendation or suggestion for at least 2 or 3, experienced providers who specialize in evaluating transplant candidates. Try following these guidelines in making your decision:Understand the difference between a physicians interests and their actual specialties Consider an established provider whose philosophy is patient focused and is their primary responsibility, and not academics or education relatedResearch the provider on the internet Ensure that they are compassionate, effective and engaged in the processWill your insurance pay this provider? When making an appointment, ask the providers staff if your insurance… will pay and if there are any out of network issues. They may not disclose this and you will be expected to pay their bill ($492.00). Ask for and review any documents, in advance, that you will be required to sign. Just as in any agreement, dont sign what you dont agree to. Remember you are the health care consumer here!This is a psychiatric appointment Ask: What kind of environment and facility will I be seen in? What other type of patients come to your facility for treatment?Pre-establish boundaries for the scope of the exam before it begins, and obtain an agreement that you will be given copies of the results that will be given to your organ transplant doctor. Discuss their privacy policies. Obtain them in writingEvaluate the providers personality. Is this person supportive, sensitive and intuitive, and do you feel comfortable talking to them? Are they answering your questions and addressing your concerns, or do you feel that you are being treated as a bother or annoying- You have the right to end the session and leave.
