Dr. Nena C. Barnhart, MD

I was spoken to as though I was a psychosymptomatic loon and my concerns were brushed aside as Dr. Barnhart had already decided on her "diagnosis" and rattled off several explanations (that I didn't require or ask for). I just wanted to escape the judgmental, condescending, inquires and diatribes.

I saw Dr. Barnhart 16mos after I was assaulted for continued screening. In addition, after I was assaulted I tested positive for the potentially cancerous kind of HPV, after I had a clean test result only 3mos before AND had the vaccine at 14. Massachusetts victims compensation covers my copays. Dr. Barnhart refused to sign paperwork because she couldn't say that my visit related to my assault, even though MA & my doctors at Peacehealth (before and after my visit with her) said that it did. I would've understood if she needed to clarify some things with me but she made this decision about my case after my appointment, without any kind of follow-up. I found out almost a year later that MA was unable to file my paperwork because of her refusal and was calling the office daily for weeks before she finally returned my phone call. Dr. Barnhart was wholly unapologetic and stood by her decision. Because she didn't see immediate evidence of an assault (obviously, 16mos later) and she couldn't… PROVE that I had contracted HPV from the assault (even though MA had already signed off on this), she could not sign off on my claim. This is so highly problematic because it's a slippery slope type of reasoning. Under those same lines, if I had contracted HIV or became pregnant from my assault, she could've argued that she couldn't prove they were results of the assault because I could've had sex with a partner earlier that day. This is just another way of blaming the victim by denying them resources which, for all intensive purposes, are there for them. What is the point of having these resources and services for women in our country if Obgyns are going to thwart them to this degree? I have family members that work for Peacehealth and I would never in a million years expect to be treated with such callous disdain and disregard. I was put in an absolutely humiliating position of calling that office day after day, to explain how I had contracted HPV after being assaulted. This was the worst experience with a doctor I've ever had and I wouldn't wish this kind of treatment on my worst enemy.
