Barbaro is a neurosurgeon and co-director of the Functional Neurosurgery Program for epilepsy, movement disorders, pain and nerve injury. He is recognized internationally for his work in surgery as a treatment for epilepsy. He also is director of the Central Nervous System Infections and AIDS Program. Barbaro, a professor of neurological surgery at UCSF, is the principal investigator in a multi-center study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the Elekta Corp. in which Gamma Knife radiosurgery is used to treat temporal lobe epilepsy. This study is the first of its kind in the United States. He earned a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
