I wanted to take a few minutes and share my experience with Prostate Cancer and my subsequent Robotic Prostatectomy performed by Dr Alex Lesani so that others in my age group may benefit from reading this. At 44 years old this was the last thing on my mind that could happen to me. My father had it when he was 65 and opted for radiation therapy but still, I had no idea there was such a high percentage for me to be diagnosed. During my military retirement physical my doctor at the time noticed an elevated PSA of 5.1 ng. I reluctantly agreed to a biopsy that was done the following month and was diagnosed with a Gleason Score of 3 3=6, a low score on the Gleason Scale according to my Urologist at the time. It didnât matter how low it was, I was shocked and saddened. I was in really good shape- Iâm an ultra marathon runner with several 50 Mile races under my belt, going to the gym 4 days a week, eating right and never smoking. How could this have happened to me?? A few weeks later I took an MRI (endo-rectal) which further confirmed the biopsy results..all of my cancer was located in the left lobe and was only about 25% of the entire gland. However, my PSA rose to 7.1 ng in under a month..a sign that my cancer was possibly more aggressive than what the biopsy noted. A few words about the biopsy and MRI. First, Iâm not going to tell you that the biopsy wasnât painful...it was. I was awake for it, but I would suggest that you opt to be sedated. The procedure entails a probe inserted into the rectum and at least 12 needles that take sample tissue from your prostate. I experienced considerable bleeding from the rectum for 24 hours, and my ejaculate was blood for about a month. It wasnât painful, just very odd to see that. No blood in my urine, however that is a possibility for some. The MRI was less painful for sure, just uncomfortable. It took about 45 minutes and I was able to drive home with no side effects after. I moved back home to Las Vegas from where I was stationed and was seen by another Urologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of Nevada. After consulting with several Urologists and Radiation Oncologists, I decided surgery was the best course of action for me. Even the Radiation Oncologist suggested it because of my age and health. I had read that online, but to actually hear it was another story. Thereâs very few patients that are in my age group, so talking with others was hard. Most were in their 60âs, like my dad, or older. A few were in their 50âs, but I had no frame of reference for someone in their mid 40âs like me. What type of side effects would I encounter? How fast will I heal? I didnât know anyone that was 44 with this cancer. I was referred to Dr Alex Lesani for a surgical consult the following week and was amazed at what I read about him online. He has performed 100âs of robotic assisted prostatectomies and is the first certified minimally invasive surgeon in Southern Nevada. I was told from day one âFind a surgeon that has performed a lot of robotic surgeries before you decide on one..you donât want someone who only performs them on occasionâ. From our very first meeting I knew I needed him to perform my procedure. Most surgeons spend a few minutes with you then leave before you can even ask them any questions. Or worse, they talk above you as if you understand what theyâre saying. Not so with Dr Lesani. He took the time to answer all my questions and explain my procedure clearly so that I could understand exactly what was going to be done. He showed me where all the incision would be and which incision were made for what part of the robotic arm (5 all together across my belly). Whatâs more, he was honest about side effects such as incontinence, erectile dysfunction and how long my initial recovery would be (4-6 weeks with a 1-2 night stay in the hospital after surgery). I was really nervous about having to wear a catheter for 7-10 days but again, Dr Lesani put me at ease and explained it was necessary for it to be in place that long to give my urethra time to heal after removal of the prostate (the bladder neck is removed and the urethra re-attached so having it in allows it to heal properly). I was scheduled for my procedure the following month. You have to be at the hospital 72 hours before surgery to have a battery of tests done. Once there, youâll give a urine sample, chest x ray, EKG and a full blood panel. This part is IMPORTANT: Theyâre going to put a wristband on you that can not be taken off until AFTER surgery. Make sure you understand this because if youâve been trying to keep your surgery to yourself, maybe you donât want co-workers to know etc, you will have this band on you and they stress you can not take it off. Youâll be given 6 packets of âbody wash clothsâ, sterile clothes to use on 6 parts of your body the night before and the day of your procedure. Theyâre fine, just odd to have to do. The day of surgery Dr Lesani was running a little late because the patient before me took longer than expected. As usual, Dr Lesani was apologetic for the delay but upbeat and put me right at ease. After a few simple questions I was off to surgery. Everybody on his surgical staff was amazing! They knew I was nervous and made me feel comfortable as best they could. I spent 2 days in the hospital before I was discharged. Youâll be bloated from the laparoscopy so getting up and moving is imperative to getting the gas out of your belly. It can be painful, but the more you walk the better youâre going to feel. The catheter doesnât feel very good, but the nursing staff showed me how to take care of it after discharge. Dr Lesani and Dr M both came to see me each day and answered all my questions. There are many doctors Iâve known with no bedside manner, but not These two. They stayed as long as they could, answering questions and explaining to me how the procedure went. I was scheduled for an xray to determine if my urethra was healed enough to have the catheter removed. A Barium dye is inserted into the bladder via the catheter tube. Unfortunately, I had a small leak and would need an additional week with the catheter in place. I went to see Dr Lesani the following day and he could see that news was hard for me. But again, he was so positive and answered all my questions that I went away feeling just as positive about my recovery as he was. Care for the catheter is a process. Youâll be given instructions on how to clean the tip of your penis, and a prescription for Lidocaine ointment that both numbs the tip and lubricates the tube so it doesnât âstickâ. Tip: get nitrile gloves, gauze pads, gentle antibacterial foaming soap and alcohol pads for cleaning. You will thank me later, trust me. Youâll have a leg bag and a larger bag for sleeping. Switching out the bags takes practice, but youâll get it. In addition, there will be a âlockâ for the tube on your leg-a sort of pad that sticks to your leg with a clamp to put the hose in. This is so the tube wonât pull out if you accidently catch something on the hose leading to the bag. I had to switch this out with a leg strap they provided because over time, the pad stops adhering to your leg. Removal is done by Dr Lesani. As usual, he was upbeat, asked me questions about my recovery, took a good look at all my stitches (which have healed so well I canât believe it! you barely notice the scars), listened to and answered all my questions and really took his time with me. The removal is quick but does hurt a bit. All total my catheter was in place for 16 days. I received my pathology report that same day and it was good news! Negative margins and nothing invasive! I could absolutely tell that Dr Lesani was just as happy to hear that as I was! Iâm 5 weeks post-op and feel great! My margins are clean and Iâm back to my normal workout routine. As soon as the catheter was out I started walking longer distances everyday. This is key to getting your regular strength back. In addition to a good diet and plenty of rest, I have no doubt Iâll be back better than ever. As for the side effects of incontinence Iâve been very lucky. The day the catheter was removed I wore a guard for a couple of days but realized, after doing Kegel exercises, I didnât really need them. In the past 3 weeks Iâve only had a handful of accidents...mostly at night so I wore the pads then, but to be honest, I donât need them anymore. I can feel when I need to go and get up like normal. It wasnât a large volume of leakage either...just enough. During the day, if I get up quickly from a chair, or laugh I get a few drops, but itâs really nothing at all...so much better than the horror stories I had read of guys going through pads all day and night. As far as ED, with the help of Cialis, I am back to having a firm erection and can have sex with no issues! This is an ABSOLUTE testament to the skill of Dr Lesani. Everything you have read online about regaining normal function is a direct result of the surgeon performing the prostatectomy. This is the part where it gets hard for me to write. Without putting too fine a point on it, I owe a debt of gratitude to Dr Lesani that my family and I will never be able to repay. Not only is he, in my opinion, the finest surgeon I have ever meet, but he is one of those doctors that you hope to have. Caring, understanding of what youâre going through, exceptionally knowledgeable and above all he has performed countless robotic prostatectomies; in short, the man knows what heâs doing. Not only am I cancer free, but my function is back so quickly that I can hardly believe it. If you take nothing else away from what I wrote, remember this; If youâre like me, searching for the right Doctor to perform a minimally invasive surgery, you need not look further than Dr Lesani.
Dr. Lesani was very friendly and professional. He was able to reassure me with his knowledge and experience. I felt that he treated me as an individual and his staff were supportive and caring. Overall I felt he was the right Dr. for me.
I trusted Dr. Lesani to perform a robotic partial nephrectomy due to my kidney tumor. He is one of the best qualified here in Las Vegas with over 9 years experience teaching & performing this procedure. I did not feel I had to go out of town to a big city. Everything went perfectly and he informed me every step of the way both before and after my surgery. Would highly recommend.
I am 70 and a retired scientist. Dr. Lesani did a cystoscopy, green light laser TURP and lithotripsy on my 1.6 cm kidney stone. All procedures were successful and VERY well done. I highly recommend Dr. L. He is very business-like and won't give you any small talk. He diagnoses the problem and takes scare of it. He has a gentle but firm manner with procedures. I had NO pain with any of this. His office is very busy. But if you have to wait a little to see him it will be well worth it.
My kidney cancer was discovered during a CT Scan for another condition. I had no symptoms of kidney cancer, and when I was told the growth should be removed, I was apprehensive. Dr. Lesani was able to do the surgery with the da Vinci Robot and left me with very few scars. I was up and running after a few weeks. I strongly recommend Dr. Lesani.
Dr Lesani definitely is one of the best surgeon we have in Las Vegas. Experienced, confident and knows his profession. I was diagnosed with Renal cell carcinoma and Dr Lesani performed a laparoscopic/robotic partial nephrectomy. If you're looking for a surgeon who specialized in robotic surgery, Dr Lesani is definitely is the only choice.
Thank you Dr. LASANI. NO MORE PAIN!
Dr. Lesani requires you to sign a mandatory binding arbitration provision. If something goes wrong with billing, treatment or surgery, you cant take them to court - especially in the case of malpractice. I cancelled my appointment to find someone else.
All I can say is Dr. Alex Lesani saved my life! I mean that literally, as an earlier diagnosis did not reveal the tumor on my right kidney, but because Dr. Lesani believed there was something there, although the ultrasound did not show it, he had me do a CT scan and sure enough there was the tumor. He scheduled me for an immediate surgery, using the DaVinci robotic machine. The surgery was performed at Summerlin Hospital and kudos to all the fine Doctors and Staff there for making this surgery almost a "non event". Dr. Lesani removed the entire tumor, and was able to rebuild my kidney and I should have at least 66% function in that kidney! The added good news is I should not have to have any further treatments such as radiation , chemical or other! Thank you again Dr. Lesani !! You surely are My Hero !!
Did a blue laser surgical procedure for me and the results were excellent.
I was a referral to Dr. Lasani, and I am happy I was. Dr. Lasani was very professional in demenor and was able to explain things to me in laymen terms. My procedure was performed on an out patient basis . No fluff here, just solid medical practice. Thank you.
Dr Lesani performed a Robotic Assisted Da Vinci method of removing my prostate. He did an outstanding job and had me nearly back to 100% in about a week. He is very knowledgeable and will give you all the options so that YOU can make an educated decision. If you do not have a consultation with him, you are not looking out for your best interests. Dr. Lesani would be the only Urologist to treat me in this town. Charles Parisi
Dr. Lesani saw me for BPH and was very professional. He does not do a lot of talking; just gets to the core of the diagnosis and treatment. His front desk help is wonderful. The schedulers are busy and take some time to return calls, but they do their work well. I had prostate ultrasound, cystoscopy and then green light laser surgery at Summerlin Hospital. Within 24 hours I was doing well - went back to work in 48. He did a great job and I would recommend him to anyone.
You know, some people have the money to pay a physician to see them; what does it say when you have to get pre-qualified to be a cash pay patient! Everyone may relax now; even the wealthy are turned down by physicians if they think you might actually have to get paid fairly!
The office staff is unorganized and Dr. Lesani is unprofessional. I left three messages to make an appointment for my dad. I finally got a return message from scheduling saying that they were calling to schedule the appointment, but when I called back the next day, the woman said that they could not make an appointment for my dad because he had previously seen another doctor in that practice. I explained that had been a long time ago, that the other doctor was not able to help him, and asked if that meant we were stuck with that other doctor forever? She told me that she doesn't question the doctor's orders and hung up! Since I had waited on hold for over 45 minutes to make the appointment, I was very angry. Eventually I came to realize that any doctor that is so independent to not take patients because they have already seen a doctor for that issue, is not the doctor for us! :(
Dr. Lesani; I want to thank you for your patience, treatment and professional care for me. When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer you gave me all the avenues to choose for this type of treatment (which I did) before making a final decision. I chose your surgical procedure. I've been cancer free, my PSA levels and testosterone levels have been monitored and where they should be. I know I made the right decision (with your input). It's nice to be able to talk to a doctor openly about what's going on with oneself and get some understandable feedback. You are one fantastic urologist, surgeon and one who has the concerns of the patient. I want to thank you for your patience, treatment and professional care for me. B.W.B. JR.
Dr Lesani has great knowledge, experience and skill in his medical specialty. Prior to meeting Dr Lesani,my previous MD failed to diagnose my medical condition, Failed to provide appropriate treatment for my medical condition. Allowed me to suffer for few years .letting me to believe that there was nothing really wrong with me. Dr Lesani went over my test results, promptly scheduled my surgical procedure with almost immediate relieve from incredible pain. Dr Lesani is very professional, always cheerful, makes me feel as if I was his only patient. Has great bedside manners. Best FU after procedure second to none. I am & will recommend Dr Lesani to everyone, friends ,family & coworkers. It's very reassuring to have top specialist like Dr Lesani to treat me .His office staff is professional & courteous as well.
I have been dealing with an enlarged prostrate BPH for over 10 years so I know first hand all of the symptoms and conditions that confronts BPH suffers including 3 emergency trips to a hospital for urine retention, the last emergency while in Mexico. I also have seen many urologist over the years, none of which I ever felt confident with.I was referred to Dr Lesani, My first appointment with him unlike the other urologist I have seen in the past. He was confident & experienced but not impersonal or pushy. He is not going to hold your hand and tell you what you want to hear at the same time he will not talk you into a procedure or overwhelm you with medical terms. After several visits and options I decided to go with the green light laser PVP. Dr Lesani is an excellent surgeon and he is very confident and comfortable in a hospital setting. I am very pleased with the results which were much better than I expected. I wish I would have seen Dr Lesani years ago.
Dr. Lesani takes the time to tell you about your treatment options and also takes the time to listen to and answer your questions. He is very experienced with da Vinci robotic surgery and has a great team assisting him. I would strongly recommend seeing Dr. Lesani if you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
I would like to highly recommend Dr. Lesani to anyone that is having prostate problems and/or has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I came to see him when I had prostate problems along with high PSA readings. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer after a positive biopsy. Dr. Lesani is extremely professional, has a positive attitude and explains everything so you can understand all of the options that you have regarding treatment of the disease. He discusses the benefits, effects and possible results of the individual treatments. He does not push one type of treatment over another. I decided to have Dr. Lesani perform surgery utilizing the Robotic Da Vinci Surgical System after I had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Dr. Lesani saved my life with his skill and knowledge as a surgeon. I have fully recovered and am extremely thankful to him. jh
this dr. is very arrogant and very self centered and thinks nothing of the pain that the patient is trying to project to him. I feel he is very unattached to any of the medical needs of his patient.
I am sorry you feel that way. It can be difficult sometimes for a physician to feel the amount of pain the patient is going through. I hope you can get the care you need soon. God bless.
Just went through kidney surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and surgery was a complete success. I owe it all to Dr. Lesani. Everything from the initial diagnosis to my follow up visit after the surgery there was nothing but complete professionalism and genuine care and concern. I couldn't be happier with my experience with Dr. Lesani and would reccomend him to anyone. Thank you again Dr.
I was referred to Dr Lesani for his experience in less invasive surgery. He was very professional and explained my procedure with detail and care. I have since recovered fully from my surgery. I recommend him to anyone looking to have surgery with the latest techniques.
From the moment I walked in the door I was greeted with a smile. The ladies there were really professional. Dr. Lesani's nurse was the most fantastic nurse I have ever encountered! When I met Dr. Lesani I knew I was in good hands. He was very knowlegeable and takes interest in the patients needs. He listened to all of my concerns and did not rush out of the room. I really felt like I was heard and understood. I left there with a smile and with a sense of relief that I was finally getting the care that I deserve. Thank you so much to you Dr. Lesani and all of your staff.
