Dr. Pamela Claire Mckenna, MD

We were so fortunate to have Dr. McKenna as our pediatrician from 1992 until my girls went off to college. She made such a positive impact that now my youngest is a nurse who trains other nurses. We just think the world of Dr. McKenna. ?????? She knows her stuff!

In my opinion Dr. McKenna is the best pediatrician on the Big Island.

Totally unbalanced and not sure whether she is mentally stable!

Dr. McKenna was my doctor growing up. When I started having children I wanted her to be their pediatrician. Now that she doesn't practice here anymore it is very hard to find someone you trust. She didn't make you feel stupid about any concerns or questions you may have. ( like some doctors do!) she always explained things in detail using non medical terms so you can understand. We really do miss her here on the island. If she were to come back I would deffinately take my kids back to her.

Dr. McKenna took our son Dawson on as a patient half way through his second year. She was AMAZINGLY caring and even took time to discuss our stresses as parents and give us advice! She was patient with our one million questions and never seemed annoyed or like we were bothering her as is the case with WAY too many doctors today. She was extremely holistic in her approach to Dawson's care- she preferred all natural and saw him as an entire entity from development physically, to health to emotional stability and gave us excellent advice in all of these areas- I credit her with a lot of how advanced and healthy all around he is today. We miss her a lot and like someone else said she left a spot in our hearts that rarely happens anymore with doctors. I am apprehensive to go to anyone else because I just don't think there is anyone better out there for children who truly cares about children and loves what they do.

Excellent doctor, very informative and thorough. Caring and insightful. She has a wonderful personality and goes above and beyond her expected duties/ goes out of her way to ensure the best care for your child. She is very knowledgeable about nutrition and has a very balanced approach of suggesting natural medicine and writing prescriptions when necessary. Hands down the best doctor I've ever encountered. Extremely patient and compassionate. I really felt that she cared about and loved our daughter only second to us as parents! Our family highly recommends her. We consider ourselves very lucky to have had her as our child's physician. Just very sad she moved as she will be dearly missed. Unlike most other physicians I've encountered, she left footprints on our hearts as she coached us/helped us grow as parents during our daughter's first year of life. I only wish I could thank her enough.

I absolutely LOVE Dr. McKenna and am so sad that she is leaving Kenosha. When searching for a pediatrician during pregnancy, doctors refused to care for my son because I planned to deliver him at home. Thankfully one of those doctors referred me to Dr. McKenna. She spent over half an hour with me over the telephone, sharing information about home births and gave me her full support. This was very important because the other doctors "concerns"had me second guessing our decision. AND because she had spent all this time with me and had never even met me. My husband and I interviewed doctor McKenna and were pleased to hear her NATURAL and medical approach of care. She gave us her personal number and offered to do a home visit if our son was born over the weekend - which she did!!!! This level of care does not happen in our area. Dr. McKenna supported me through the difficulties I experienced breastfeeding, offering ME consultations when things did not go well. Yes, Dr. McKenna… strongly supports breastfeeding, but then so do I. I never felt rushed in our visits and always felt as though she truly cared. I am so sorry that she is leaving, and only hope that I can find a doctor half is caring as she is. To all potential and future patients, this is a quality doctor like no other.

She botched my sons circumcision and now as a toddler he might have to get it corrected. I knew it did not look right after it healed, however I was a new mother and didn't know any better. She gave me a speech at the hospital about how circs are not necessary...but she does them. She shouldn't! Why was she the attending pediatrician if she doesn't know what she is doing? And why say you can do something you are not comfortable doing? If I had known at the time what damage she had done I would have filed a lawsuit.

I have nothing but love for Dr. McKenna. I bring both of my daughters to her in Kenosha, WI. I was surprised to read that someone said she was "judgemental" about working, as I am work full time and she is well aware of this - she asked me if it was possible for me to go to her daycare to nurse her during the day (she obviously has strong feelings about breastfeeding/breastmilk - and I am in total agreement). When I said it was impossible, she asked me about my pumping plan. No biggie. She spends a lot of time with us every time we go there - for sick visits or wellness visits. Her staff is also very nice - both the nurses and the front desk. I liked that she offered some natural and less expensive approaches along with prescriptions. For instance, she talked about what foods can help with my infant's dry skin and using probiotics to help with side effects of penicillin for my toddler. Why any doctor I've ever had doesn't discuss nutrition is beyond me and this thrilled… me. During my first sick visit with my new baby, she gave me her cell phone number so I could text her if I needed her overnight. Her personal cell phone number! One thing that bothers me is that I am always trying to give the ladies at the front desk my co-pay and they seem to sneak out of it every time (I'm not saying I don't have to pay it; I just have to deal with a bill and phone calls, which annoys me). And while this last one doesn't bother me, occasionally I have to wait in a room for awhile (maybe 10-15 minutes). But I know that's because Dr. McKenna takes her time with every kid.

Excellent Doctor!!! Sorely missed here in Waimea. She goes beyond the call to maintain superior care & offers advice far beyond all others. She opens up her heart in the care of your child, only if you are welling to hear her. Her opinion can scare those unwilling to open up but her knowledge is superb. Wish she was still here...you're truly missed Dr.! Come home!!!
