I can't say enough positive things about my experience w. Dr. Gushard. I was referred to him for a visual field test by my opthamologist who thought i might be a candidate for early onset glaucoma. I was very nervous about the referral but Dr. Gushard was so comforting and spent a lot of time explaining the disease to me and making sure that I understood what the test was all about and why they were doing it as a precaution. He is a very good doctor and I would highly recommend him. I have never felt so confident about a physician as I did with this doctor.
I have been seeing this Doctor for 20 years. I have never had a problem as long as I had regular insurance. However, now I have a problem. I had my eye exam by 2 Dr's. The Optometrist and Dr. Gushard the Opthamologist. When it came to billing, a bill was submitted to medicare for the Opthamologist. Dr's office received payment leaving a balance of $80.00 of which I started paying on a Monthly basis. Before I could get anymore paid, they sent it out to collections without sending a bill to medicare for the Optometrist for which they received another 40.00 leaving a balance of $40.00 that I owed. However, it had already gone to collections. I have paid a total of 60.00 between the Dr's office and the collection agency. I, today received a letter stating because my account was sent to a collection agency, that my appt for August 2013 has been canceled and I have to find another Dr. This is totally ridiculous. I have worked with this man for most of that 20 years that I have been seeing him as a patient. I have no problem with his medical abilities or his front desk staff. The only problem I have is with his billing practices.
I've been bringing my mother to this office for the last 5 years. She's over 90, suffers from dementia and diabetes. The wait time is terrible, well over an hour and more with dilation. While Dr Gushard and the other two doctors have related well with my mother the technicians are more abrupt and at times rude. The front desk is cold and unwelcoming. The person who schedules surgeries seems disorganized and keeps you on the phone forever to make an appt. The final straw came when my mother was on her way to the surgery and it was canceled. We rescheduled the surgery but the doctor wanted to do another pressure check because the one done previously was 4 months ago and he wanted one more recent. When I asked if my mother (in a nursing home on mass health with limited funds) would be charged for the office visit I was told of course she would. No apologies were ever given for her inconvenience. He told me that we do not have national medicine and he has bills and a staff to pay. That anyone in business would understand that. When I told him he and his staff could use some customer service training he told me his staff is exceptional and that I would probably be happier with another ophthalmologist! As awful as the altercation was to go through I think it will be a blessing in disguise. I was told by another former patient that they did not need the procedure Dr. Gushard ordered after seeing another eye doctor. We'll see if this is true for my mother. Good luck to anyone seeing this doctor!
Dr.Gushard is a wonderful caring doctor who always answers all my questions.
Prepare to wait, as if you were visiting the emergency room! I have had multiple eye injuries from work, and have had many visites with Dr. gushard's office. I have never waited less than 90 minuites! If your eyes need to be dialated, add another hour in the waiting room. I had a follow-up appointment, couldn't afford the day off work so i left his office after a 2 hr wait, no co-pay was returned. Then the dr. had the audacity to send me a letter, basically said, if I didn't make another appointment, I would be dropped as a patient!! As if to say my time is meaningless and his is invaluable. Well Dr.gushard, I've found a new doctor, and couldnt be happier!!
This is the second time i went to this office. Each time at minimum a 1 hr. wait from the time of the appointment. This is total disregard for the patients time. Guess they feel the only valuable time is the doctor's! I will be finding another doctor.
Dr. Gushard is a very caring and very experienced doctor. I feel better having to wait vs. being rushed in and out. I never feel rushed and so if you have to wait and get a good exam, what is the alternative? I have NEVER found the staff to be unprofessional. They're courteous and accomodating.
The office staff is terrible - appointments are double booked or just booked incorrectly. Patients are kept waiting, sometimes for more than an hour. The office staff fights openly in front of patients. My original assessment of the doctor himself was fine, and I did my best to overlook the staff rudeness until one night I was kept waiting over 90 minutes for my appointmnet and I discontinued my relationship with the office. When I said I was leaving, the woman at the desk would not return my copay - I practically had to pry it out of her hand. I went back to my primary and said I was never returning to that doctor and would like a new referral. My new doctor is wonderful. The kicker is that she was baffled by the pressure being put on me to have glaucoma surgery. It was not needed - maybe in 10 years or more, but not now. I left the other doctor's office just in time, the appointment I had that night was a pre-surgery appointment.
