Terrible, horrible, awful. He refuses patients pain meds after painful surgeries. He wasted my time. He said he had nothing to offer me. Rough bedside manner too. W.M.C. couldn't do better than this?!

Dr. Bergamaschi did what no other surgeon dared. I suffered for 2 YEARS and saw different surgeons however none of these surgeons would operate unless it was "emergency surgery". I was severely malnourished and dehydrated. As a result I was hospitalized in 2019 after acquiring the flu. Dr. Bergamaschi "heard" of my deteriorated condition and visited me in my hospital room. He performed some tests that day and immediately got back to me and my family with the results. He explained the problems clearly and also explained how complicated and dangerous the surgery was that needed to be performed. His willingness and ability to perform the surgery I needed when no one else would help me saved my life. His continuing care and friendliness is remarkable and I am lucky to be one of his long term patients. Thanks to him and his medical talent I continue to be a colon rectal survivor and myself and my entire family are eternally thankful to him.

I went to Dr. Bergamaschi because he was doing Robotic colorectal surgery, which was what I needed to 'maintain my quality of life'. I went to him for my second opinion and stayed with him. Best health decision I ever made. Dr. Bergamaschi is such a professional and an expert in Colorectal Diseases. He explained my 14 hour procedure from start to finish. I am cancer free for 12 years now. I have recommended him to my family, friends and even complete strangers. Dr. Bergamaschi is a part of our family now and will always be.

Husband had a very low rectal CA (stage IV metastatic with primary very close to anal verge). Most CRC surgeons did not even talk about cure much less “saving the as*h***.” Dr. B was confident that he could maintain the sphincter and even do the surgery laparoscopically…and he did! For a fit guy in his early 50s, like my husband, this was huge - a permanent ostomy was something he just did not even want to consider. There was an ileostomy and then reversal along the way, but Dr B was able to do successfully what very few other surgeons were even willing to consider. Office is a bit disorganized- he is spread pretty thin (clinics in Long Island and Westchester), but as a surgeon, very very skilled. I am a surgeon myself and give him kudos for his results.

I have been a patient of Dr. Bergamaschi for 7 years. He is always attentive and responsive to my concerns. My cancer aftercare is first-rate. [This site would not let me give five stars.]

He acted irritated by my questions and eventually stated he had nothing to offer me. (He didn't even come up with a diagnosis or prescribe a trial of topical ointment). He pestered me for medical records which I had forgotten to bring. Once I copied and mailed these papers to him, I was told he would call me. (He didn't). Instead, he claimed never to have received them, when I KNEW the correct address. Lastly, he stated that he prescribes no pain medicine to the patients he performs THD on (an extremely painful operation). It is obvious that he does not care about the comfort of his patients.

To say I am a complex patient is an understatement. I was diagnosed with my 4th cancer (rectal) almost 5 years ago (2015), likely related by prior treatments for lymphoma (which included abdominal surgery and a stem cell transplant). After multiple consultations at some of the best hospitals in New York I decided to go with Dr. Bergamaschi (at Stony Brook University Hospital at the time) and I’m glad I did. The breath of his experience is impressive but what found most impressive is his ability to narrow in that knowledge to treat the case and the situation in front of him without ‘cookie cutter’ responses. The lengthy (some over 9hrs) surgeries, ostomies and reversals necessary to ‘put be back together’ would likely be too much or scare away most but it is because of him I’m living a normal life today (cancer free) and have had such an excellent outcome.

After all the scans and tests, Dr. Bergamaschi explained in various conversations, that I had a serious blockage in my lower colon. The tumor was growing and would have to be removed. I was pretty scared. He was patient and thorough. Dr. Bergamaschi outlined the possible outcomes and potential treatments. After 2 colonoscopies, and a tube down my nose for a couple of days, he went to work. He and his staff were attentive after surgery. I made an appointment in his office when I was released. There he explained the seriousness of the situation and his recommended course of action. He was very direct. Perhaps that is the best way to hear difficult news. That was 53 months ago... Early on, he did scold me for not getting a colonoscopy at age 50. He was right. I might have avoided this club membership.… But, I am here and recovering. Much of that I owe to Dr. Bergamaschi.
