Be Careful of this Doctor!!!!

Dr Salam was overly zealous when it came to treatment and medication. She demanded an unexplainable and un-needed amount of follow up visits when changing and adjusting medications. Office visits were often demanded once weekly to make minor, or almost non-affected notations. I also felt that her motivation was money based, i had come to her explaining i was new to the area, and needed only someone to make medication adjustments and continued treatment. When the bills (many) came in she had expected payment for psychotherapy- not just medicinal consultation. At times i was coming weekly to make foreseeable and ongoing titration or increases in medication- the same numbers each week; this would be a pattern for several weeks- yet when having to cancel within this period, she would not allow the change to continue via phone "check-in". The same change had to be made a week later, following the same pattern that had been established for over 2 months. Her personal demeanor was cold, and methodical- she implemented blanket guidelines for all patients regarding certain medications, regardless of their personal history. Urinary drug screening was a constant in order for her to treat any patient wanting certain types of prescriptions, especially if there was any hint of abuse in a patient's past- any length of sobriety was not considered; a newly sober addict was treated very similarly to a seasoned recovered addict of multiple sober years or time. She is inflexible, admittedly says she is not interested in having a equal relationship regarding feelings of treatment plan, diagnosis or interpretation of one's illness. It's her way or no way, and she will take the information that she wants and validates from the patient; she does not believe that a patient is able of knowing themselves accurately or absolutely enough to feel even remotely empowered within the process of one's work with her. Within the small community that she works, Brattleboro VT- i have heard these feelings echoed by a vast number of people that interacted with her- or were smart enough to avoid her due to her bad reputation. I have dealt with mental illness for many years; i have been on both sides of the glass- so to speak. I worked as a mental health specialist at Harvard's and Mass General's mental heath hospital- McLean in Belmont MA. I have worked with some of the nations best and brightest- and i have been treated by them too. She is literally one of the worst doctors that i have ever had the mis-pleasure of having to work with- and all that have to deal with emotional issues daily know that the time and effort it takes to "break" in a new doctor is too long to have it end it starting over- and thus waiting through another long and painful period of time to get the right care and relief. I wouldn't waste your precious sanity and strength- just stay away from this one: Dr. Saba Salam.
