This doctor should not be trusted. In the beginning I thought he was fantastic, however, after 2 years, going to him every 6 to 8 weeks, sonograms, pictures of my eyes, and laser (I am a diabetic), instead of better, my eyes were getting worse. Dr. Melgen decided he was going to remove the scar tissue he had caused, because of doing to much laser. Well... He ended up putting a hole in the center of my left Retina, tried to repair it, it failed, and now I have a blind spot in the center of my left eye. I would not recomend this doctor to anyone. After 2 years of putting up with him, and thousands of dollars, I decided I was going to get a second opinion, and I did find an excellent Doctor (specialist as well), and after doing all the test, he called me in to his office, and proceeded to tell me what doctor I had been seeing. Now, that is scary. So he does have a reputation, and not all good! I have talked to numerous people, and they all thought I should sue Dr. Melgen. Even another eye doctor told me I should. Needless to say, I didn't but I did call my insurance company and told them they should really watch this doctor. Everyone including myself, believes he is doing this for the money to the patients that have good health insurance. He needs to support all his houses, planes, boats, etc....... I even called the Insurance commission of the State of Florida, however, they were wanting me to fill out so much paperwork, that I would not do it, due to the fact, my vision is horrible. Of course, Dr. Melgen has a lot of older patients, and probably do not even realize what he is doing to them. When I say he was doing it for my money (Insurance), they were being charged approximately 5000.00 dollars every 6 to 8 weeks. I went to him for 2 years... and had that much laser. I now have been going to my new doctor for 4 years, and have not had laser one time. What does this tell you????? Sorry, for the rant, but I would not send my worst enemy to this man.

I visited Dr. Durante in Stuart and he sent me directly to Dr. Melgen after discovering I had a detached retina. Dr. Melgen told him to send me down immediately so he could see me. Long story short, short wait time, great staff and the friendliest doctor I have ever met in my life. with a 10 minute procedure that I didn't feel anything, I was in my car and headed home. Dr. Melgen, you're the greatest.
