Dr. Samir Hasmukh Shah, MD

I was recently hospitalized for severely slurred speech. My neurologist Dr. Tran and Nathan Yeh were the ones who diagnosed me after 1 year of seeing 8 doctors- with Myasthenia Gravis Exacerbation based on a low positive modulating antibody test and several symptoms like double vision, breathing issues, choking, limb weakness etc etc. 2 months later they both highly recommended that I go to Presbyterian ER after notifying them of my speech slurring issue. They stated they did not want my breathing to be compromised next. Once I was there and admitted the other doctors from Dr. Trans practice were questioning his diagnosis. Especially Dr. Shah and his posse. I had no idea what to say bc Dr Trans and Nathan's appointment came with a full treatment plan that included seeing Dr. Young in May to review my case as a 2nd opinion, Mestinon drug which helped the bulbar symptoms and Gammagard infusions monthly for MG. A bit complex for a questionable diagnosis! While hospitalized, Dr. Shah… stated that the IVIG infusions do not have side effects so the extreme headaches I was getting, sweating, light sensitivity and chills was treated with Tylenol, and aspirin after I begged for imitrex. He then gave me an ultimatum of whether or not I even wanted the infusions or to check out of the hospital bc of the headaches being so severe. As well as, because my speech was not back to normal after 2 treatments. Gammagard manufacturers label says it can can take days to weeks to see a difference. Plus the 5 day dose is by weight. I hadnt had enough to make a difference yet. Meanwhile, the hospitalist doctor and nurses and his neurology partner said severe meningitis type headaches are the #1 side effect of Gammagard (its also on the label). They can even last 72 hours after treatment is completed. I then lost complete and total respect for Dr. Shah. The amazing hospitalist Dr. Vu listened intently to my issues and could clearly see I was severely flushed, suffering from pain and even my veins at the IV site were burned and inflammed. He prescribed a pretreatment of benadryl, imitrex, lovenox, Tylenol and aspirin and post treatment of imitrex. Miraculously I had zero complications after that for treatments 3-5, well except the swollen, red veins. The nurses moved my IV around for each treatment though. After the 4th treatment I was speaking normally again. Dr. Shaw then tried to send me to UTSouthwestern for a new diagnosis, instead of going back to Dr. Tran!! I told him absolutely not, Dr. Tran and Nathan are my doctors and the treatments they prescribed obviously worked wonders. My recommendation is that Neurology Consultants of Dallas needs to review the consistency of treatments and practices amongst their doctors bc noone was on the same page. This didn't bode well for my confidence at all. I'm not even sure why Nathan advised me to go to Presbyterian an out of network hospital since Dr. Tran nor he ever saw me. They didnt seem interested in advocating for their patient or talking to me or my husband for just 15 minutes to find out what was really going on. That was disappointing bc I really love and trust them. My husband called them to find out what was going on and Dr. Tran and Nathan via the receptionist said to do what Dr. Shah says. I was quite hurt and confused by this comment. I shouldn't have to suffer bc Dr. Shah doesn't respect or trust Dr. Tran. Dr. Tran shouldn't be put in a position where another doctor completely undermines his work with a patient. Finally, Dr. Krampitz stepped up and agreed with me to follow Dr. Trans plans for me vs Dr. Shahs advice to seek care elsewhere. Dr. Krampitz took the time to look at my video journals of past MG symptoms with my drooping eyelids and rolling eyeballs and voice changes. He didn't seem to be questioning anything that Dr. Tran and Nathan had reported on my diagnosis. This is my very first and only online review of a doctor ever in my life. The experience I had was scary, confusing and hurtful. I hope to continue my care there, but please review cohesiveness.

If I could give him more stars I would... my mom had a major stroke and Dr. Shah is the only doctor who thinks she can make a speedy and full recovery... he has given me and my family hope... Great person and even better doctor...

As I was unresponsive for the third time he told my husband it was the result of one Vicodin, which I don’t believe would cause me to not respond to a sternal rub. He is condescending and negligent.

Condescending, quick to jump to psychogenic diagnosis rather than determine actual problem. Had to see another doctor to find out what was really wrong with me. Wasted time and money at Presby Dallas and this doctor made matters much worse by telling me I was crazy when I was not. I had a true physical issue which they could have treated, and he didn’t even order some of the most basic muscular testing.

I was having numbness and vision issues that could possibly be mini-strokes. He was thorough in his explanation and didn't order excess tests, yet his exam was comprehensive.

I was seen by Dr. Shah inpatient while I was suffering from other medical complications. I was very nervous & he did nothing to put me at ease. He did not ask questions that helped me better answer symptoms related to my neurological issues. In fact it became clear w/i 5 min. he was in such disbelief of my other serious concomitant medical conditions/diseases he immediately set out to disprove my prior diagnosis.. It became even more clear that this visit was a complete waste of my time when Dr. Shah made several sarcastic commemts about the medications I was taking for these diseases despite knowing my physicians yet not taking the time to know anything about how these diseases had impacted my life on a daily basis. He made me very uncomfortable w/his dismissive behavior & demeanor that made me want to run (if I could have) to the other Neurologists that were highly recommended to me & had been exceptionally warm & kind as my appt. was just around the corner. So it turns out if Dr.… Shah disagrees w/your other treatment plans than you must be faking your neurological illness as he intimated about my other diseases. The only thing I can thank him for is it turned out I required emergent surgery for a disease that requires I receive IV therapy routinely. He lacked any warmth, the ability to draw information out of me that was relavent to a diagnosis & answered my husband's very direct questions w/cagey & sarcastic responses. I wish I had known his primary area of experience is w/strokes, not autoimmune disorders - although his reviews their aren't exactly stellar either. So when Dr. Shah can't determine to his satisfaction the cause of an already diagnosed disorder, he determined I was faking this issue & told me to prepare for "lots of counseling". He never once came in & just discussed possiblilities nor any diagnosis. Anytime he came into my room he would say the same thing "Do you have any questions for me" or "Do you feel better yet" all the while knowing my husband & I were waiting for him to speak to us using more than 10-15 generic words. Vet your doctors carefully & don't stay w/someone that makes you uncomfortable on the very first meeting. Warmth & competence aren't mutually exclusive & I regret staying w/a doctor that was rude to my face in a way he thought was above my intellectual ability to understand. I was always polite but he seemed clueless to the pain I was in from the surgery I had gone through. I already have found my treating Neuroligist & he specializes in autoimmune disorders, & the whole gamut of neurological disorders. He Seems to treat all of his patients w/the time & kindness they need, there are plenty of resources offered through his office & he doesn't possess a condescending bone in his body. Yes Dr. Shah I have been to counseling, to learn to take more control over my healthcare & to choose my doctors wisely. There was a time when I accepted anything a doctor told me even if it was rude or inappropriate. I no longer am that young patient, but I am still often scared. You should consider getting to really knowing your patients before you make judgements & improving your bedside manner. You were so cold & offputting at a time that couldn't have been worse & the fact that you never once said "I hope you get to feeling better" or anything remotely nice would have gone a long way in earning my trust. Instead my every instinct said run, make it through this & go somewhere else where the doctor doesn't judge or diagnose someone w/o a proper discussion that goes both ways.

Dr Shah is very professional and did a very thorough job for my husband. He has thorough knowledge about neurology and did a great job at answering questions and explaining what was going on. He is a great caring doctor that I feel blessed to have taking care of my family member.

Dr. Shah attended my wife in the hospital after a seizure resulted in foot drop. Prompt attention to foot drop is essential to a successful recovery. Dr. Shah did NOTHING about my wife's foot drop, and his delay may have condemned my wife to a lifetime of braces, limited lifestyle, and poor health. In addition, although he appeared very thorough in examining my wife for seizure, he actually stated that since he did not see her seizure and no signs of seizure showed up while she was on the monitor, he could not confirm whether she even had one. This is very bad bedside manner. But his extreme irresponsibility in failing to attend to her other neurological condition led us to fire this group. Unfortunately other neurologists now say she should have had immediate attention to her drop foot. I do not recommend this doctor or his medical group. I recommend avoid this doctor.
