Exceptional care by a very brilliant doctor. After living with neck, arm, and back pain for almost 4 years with no clear diagnosis, Dr. McCance was able to come to the root of my problem. He performed cervical spine surgery on me just 2 months ago and I have to say my pain is gone! He has given me my quality of life back and each day I feel better and better. Just when I started to lose hope I met an amazing, compassionate, highly skilled surgeon. Thank you Dr. McCance !
I got my first of 2 spine operations from Dr. McCance when I was 18 years old. 7 days later, he operated again to finalize the procedure. This was in 2001 (15 years ago), and yet I'm still as grateful as always for the stellar job he did on my surgery. Make no mistake about it -- my operation was a major one. I had severe curve in my spine and absolutely needed surgery. Through two procedures, his team corrected my scoliosis and fused my spine from T3 to L3, which is a 12 level fusion (thoracic to lumbar). In English, more than half of my spine was fused with metal rods! If you think that I'm living confined to a wheelchair, rolling around in pain, or bed ridden to this day, you're not crazy. The truth is, however, I was able to recover and live an active life as a professional circus performer. Although I couldn't pursue a career as a full time professional acrobat as I originally planned due to my spinal condition, I was able to continue juggling and have made a bigger name for myself as a professional in that field. Don't get me wrong. Recovery was grueling. I had to work my butt off and fight through countless hours of physical rehab to get back to normal activity. There are still things that I cannot do. I had to say goodbye to doing backflips, playing contact sports, and doing heavy manual labor. But the good part is that I did eventually return to a normal life, and at 33 years old, I'm in even better shape than my 18-year old, pre-surgery self. With Dr. McCance's great attention to detail when it came to my case, I felt like I was his only patient. When I tell people the type of operation that I got, they're in disbelief until I show them a photo of my x-ray. They see how fit I am and the career that I have, and they say "No way!" They then rightfully credit me for what they can imagine was a tough recovery, but I also make it a duty to bring attention to the incredible job that Dr. McCance did. I couldn't have had a better surgeon to do it, and I highly appreciate all of his hard work. If you're with him, you're in good hands.
I visited this Dr. based on his reputation and recommendation of a friend who had surgery with him 10 years ago. I made an appointment to get an accurate diagnosis of a failed Laminotomy. He was very thorough in his examination on the fist visit . He then sent me to a friend of his for a very expensive CT-Mylegram and full spinal X-Ray. A week later I visited the Dr. in his office and the whole back wall was covered with my X-Rays. After some discussion, he agreed that a Fusion was necessary and led me down the hall to Monica, his surgical manager and we filled out some forms. Dr. McCance said he had everything he needed and would see me at surgery. He was a bit cold but some of the NYC surgeons have this personality. A week later, I get a call from his office manager(Martha) to discuss my Out of Network exposure. I almost fell off my chair when she told me that Dr. McCance's fees were $148,000 and he would need a minimum of $90,000 to perform the surgery. She said he agreed to "cap" my exposure at $40,000 which was non-refundable and had to be paid before the procedure. All subsequent insurance payments would have to go to the Dr. What has this world come to if a DR. won't accept less than $90,000 for a three hour procedure? As other posters have said, it's all about the almighty dollar with this Dr. I wasted three trips to the City but now know to avoid Park Ave. Drs. You are better off going to a teaching hospital where the Drs. are just as good and take your insurance.
Discectomy and laminectomy years ago and all going great. I would recommend Dr. McCance in a heartbeat.
I could not have asked for a more perfect experience. Dr. McCance and his staff took excellent care of me. Dr. McCance operated on my ruptured disc which had greatly affected a nearby nerve. Since surgery, I have not had any pain and that in itself is a miracle! Prior to surgery, the pain was intolerable! I feel so much better and will be forever grateful to him and staff for the superior care that I got.
Five years into my L1 to S1 lumbar fusion for degenerative scoliosis and kyphosis, I am still doing great and am pain free without the need for medication. I was in my late 30s when I had surgery and wasn't very optimistic about my chances of a major improvement in my symptoms. Returning to a normal life was not even on my list of possibilities, but that is exactly what happened after my surgery. You will not find a better back surgeon, in my opinion, and I cannot recommend Dr. McCance enough. The proof is in the pudding.
I had significant revision of prior spinal fusion. I went solely on the doctor's credentials on state physician website. My condition never improved from the surgery, I had issues after the surgery that I did not have to deal with before. There's more kindness shown before surgery, afterwards no follow up commitment at all. His PA's are not as experienced you'd expect in an office dealing with complicated spinal conditions. The business staff us enough reason to avoid this practice, incompetent and extremely rud.
Dr. McCance is an excellent surgeon. I would recommend him highly. However one of his staff members, named MARTHA is an absolutely witch and doesn't know how to speak to people courteously. She reflects poorly on an otherwise highly professional practice.
I had major fusion revision, with very poor outcome, appears that the doctor was not prepared or qualified to perform such complicated surgery. As if that wasn't enough, billing office was horrific, placed my benefits at risk. Whole experience was a nightmare.
It is now a little more than a year since my 2 level spinal fusion of L4, L5, S1. I am totally pain free and have resumed all activities. I work in my 1100 acre forest in New Jersey using chain saws and other hand-held equipment as well as operating large forestry machinery, all without pain. When I first came to Dr McCance, I was a 74 year old man whose very active lifestyle had come to a halt due to sever and continuous lower back pain. I had done a lot of investigating of different procedures. My knee specialist recommended that I see Dr. McCance. The appointment was arranged quickly and was a pleasant experience. I had x-rays and MRIs going back a couple of years. The first thing Dr. McCance did was refer me to a Neurologist.for more tests. The Neurologist sent me for a Mylogram and CAT scan which turned out to be a very fortunate thing. These tests showed that there was abnormal, movement between L4 and L5 in addition to the disk problem and stenisis we already knew about at at L5,S1. If this had not been discovered any surgery on L5, S1 would not have given me pain relief. So the doctor did a 2 level fusion which has turned out great. My only negative comment is about the hospital after-care. I went to Lennox Hill where I received the worst care I ever experienced. The nurses were mostly foreigners and very uncaring. I even wrote to the hospuital and received a reply saying that they would look into my complaints. That was the last I heard about it. Perhaps Mt. Sinai would have been a better choice. All-in-all, I could not be happier. I have my life back and can do anything I want withouit pain or restriction. That includes shoveling snow whish I already did this winter.
i went in to see him for spinal stenosis. i was using a cane occasionally and not responding to epidurals. his PA asked to walk on my heels and toes although i said i needed a double knee replacement. this pulled muscles in my hip and legs and i left there needing a walker and a wheelchair. the doctor said my inability to walk proved i needed surgery. no it proved i was an idiot for doing what his PA asked. all they seemed interested in was surgery. the doctor said it was minimally invasive and the person who was going to schedule the mris said it wasn't. i don't want a surgeon who gives me one answer and an office staff that gives me another. i have a new pain management doctor and an accupuncturist and it's cost me thousands of dollars to recover from my heel and toe walk. i paid mccance what the insurance paid me. now they are dunniing me for another $78. he may be the best surgeon in the world but there are plenty of others in new york.
I returned to Dr. McCance, having undergone a previous surgery (for a different issue) in 2000. This time, I had a large piece of herniated disk sitting on my Cervical spinal canal. Very painful, very debilitating. When we mutually determined that I needed surgery, Dr. McCance fit me into his schedule immediately. I awoke from surgery and instantly knew that the surgery had been successful. As I told one of the PAs, I feel 200% better -- beyond expectation. Dr. McCance, is both kind and a very straightforward person, which I appreciate. And of course, results matter above all. I would recommend him unreservedly. I also find his staff to be knowledgeable, respectful and helpful.
When I first met Dr McCance at a friendâs recommendation I was at my wits end. I had lower back spinal fusion 9 months prior and the pain was actually worse than before the surgery. I was surviving on a constant increasing level of pain killers. It was debilitating mentally and physically. I thought I was doomed to face life in constant pain not knowing when the next shooting pain would appear. My first surgeon blamed my genetically weak bones as the culprit. This turned out to be a complete fallacy. As I sat waiting for Dr McCance to finish reviewing my chart and various x-rays and MRIâs I had no idea that this man was going to get my life back in order. He looked at me and said âIâm sorry for what you have gone through â I can fix this!â When I went back for a follow up one-month after surgery , despite feeling much better and the assurances of Dr McCance , I was scared â as now I would see whether my " weak bones " were fusing. He walked in , looked at the new X-rays and admired the scar on my back (which is now hardly noticeable). Sensing my concerns he asked whatâs wrong â I said well did it fuse. He looked at me and said âI told you I would fix it and yes of course there is bone growthâ. The feeling of relief and elation was incredible. Soon thereafter - though I thought I wasted 10 months of my life in unnecessary pain - my mind kept asking why didnât I come here first? Well thank God I finally did. Throughout the process Dr. McCanceâs entire staff is devoted to your healing. I canât say enough about Diana who is one of the physicianâs assistants â her caring and compassion was tremendous support before and after my surgery. Other than a week or two of post-surgery medication I havenât needed any pain killers since my revision spinal fusion surgery with Dr McCance. He gave me back my life.
I am a 28 year old female who went to see Dr. McCance with severe sciatic pain. I first underwent a laminectomy. This helped the pain but the disk re-herniated. I was now unable to walk or ever stand up and was taking very strong drugs just to get through the day. Dr. McCance then suggested going through with the spinal fusion. I am so happy that I went through with this procedure. I am now 99% pain free. It has been about 6 months since my surgery. At about 3 months after surgery I started running again and going back to my yoga classes. Now you would never be able to tell I had back problems. The flexiility in my back and legs is better than I can remember. Dr. McCance and his whole team really helped me get back to a healthy, normal life. And I will never have to take that horrible pain medicine again!
Dr. McCance is the most competent and intelligent doctor I have ever encountered. His surgery, which was extensive, solved a lifelong problem of neck pain and deterioration. In turn, this has only given my a happier, healthier life.
I wanted to like Dr. McCance after reading such glowing reviews on many sites. My advice is for anyone who needs a consultation on a back injury that you see Dr. McCance only if he accepts your insurance and only if your injury is serious enough. How would you know your back injury is serious? Well, I didn't know myself which is why I went to go see an accredited doctor. I threw out my back and was unable to walk for five days. I returned to work but was unable to sit down, standing all day long and only sitting for brief increments. After taking myself off pain killers for the 10-day prescribed limit on most OTC bottles, the pain returned and I was worse for wear with a crooked posture and gripping pain. I tried all of the recommended home remedies (light stretching/yoga, cold/hot compress) but at this point I was concerned I had something that could plague me in the long term.I sought out the doctor and spoke with his front desk at Spine Associates who were generally helpful. They expedited an appointment at Lenox Hill (more on this later) and I didn't wait too long at the doctors office. However, beyond that I was disappointed. His associate, a brunette whose name I forget, was initially nice and seemed concerned over my injury but after the Dr. McCance's icy reception, she herself became very distant and uncaring which I found very unpleasant to be around. The doctor did a very quick physical examination and was in and out of the room in 5 minutes, and I say that without exaggeration. Those X-rays and MRIs the doctors front desk expedited for me? Well the doctor never looked at them. His diagnosis was, "I think you have a mild herniated disc." You think? Why don't you check for certain from those X-Rays and MRIs your front desk told me I HAD to get before I got an appointment, and no less at the hospital you are associated with and most likely get referral money from? Wouldn't that help in your diagnosis? He then asked if I wanted to get physical therapy, at which point I asked him, "Do you think I need physical therapy?" and he responded with, "If you want to." I then asked him if I should see a chiropractor because of my crooked posture, and he again replied with, "If you want to." I was not curt or short with him in any way when I asked him questions--I only asked as anyone concerned with their health would and I really did not understand his blase attitude. As I said earlier, all of the stellar reviews are probably from patients who had injuries which the doctor deemed as worthwhile to see. My injury, as minor as it is in the litany of back injuries, was not worth his attention and in my honest opinion it was because it was not bankable and not worth more time to consult over or to provide me with any doting care or advice. I do not doubt the doctor is probably a great surgeon, but he is selective and I would only consider seeing him again if surgery were my only recourse. This review is more of a warning for others that if your injury isn't serious then other doctors are a better bet.
I had a Lumbar fusion - 2 levels due to degenerative disk disease, nerve compression and stenosis. I was very nervous but my fears were put to rest after initial visit. I had the surgery and it was the best decision for me I am 70-80% improved. I sill have nerve pain but they said healing can occur up to 2 yeas after. I am at 1 year 3 months. I wish I had done it sooner. I feel like a new person that was given a big chunk of my life back. Only thing I wish was they had me do upper body strengthening pre surgery because I had a hard time with getting up for the first three weeks. I would also recommend aqua therapy after surgery as P/T other than that very grateful to Dr McCance and his staff.
Dr. McCance is by far the best. I spent many years in pain. Went to many Dr.s and pain specialists, but never relieved of my pain. Was very afraid of having surgery, due to the horror stories that I've heard and the bad surgeries, that I have seen people experience. Was recommended that I see Dr. McCance by a friend, who is a Dr. who said he was great. Very happy I did. Dr. McCance did a 3 level fusion on my lower back and 4 level fusion on my neck. With wonderful results, I have full range of motion of both upper and lower back and neck. I now live a pain free life. I am riding my horses again, sleeping through the night, free of migraines, and most of all, able to enjoy everything that I had lost for so many years. I thank him tremendously for his talent and kind being. I highly recommend him to everyone I know. Oh! By the way, his office staff are awesome, very patient and are there for you every step of the way. Thumbs up to Dr. McCance and all of the staff at Spine Associates.
I was suffering from right leg pain and pain in my lower back. Pain was all the time.I was diagnosed with L4-5 herniated disc. Physical Therapy and chiropractor's treatment did not help. Dr. McCance did surgical procedure-right L4-5 laminotomy discectomy. Pain is gone, I feel like new person, I can walk for hours.Thank you Doctor.
Absolutely fabulous! Could not walk up stairs and gait was off (toe drop), was refererred to Dr. Mccance and 2 wks later in surgury. The next day I was walking normal! And now 1 year later back in the gym w/weights, spinning, running and sports drills (everything I used to do)! Besides the successful surgury, Dr listens, did't dismiss anything I said (even when I told him I had a 'dead' leg) and Dr asst. and office staff wonderful people! Had both a laminectamy and discectomy (L4-5). Referrals he gave me for prep for surgury, both dr & office staff just as wonderful! Went into surgury knowing I was in the best hands! Would recommend him to all! I was absolutley terrified of surgury, which he knew from my panic, but reassured me that I would walk normal immediately after surgry. That was so true! Absolutely the best in all aspects!
I recurrent disc herniation and degeneration disc disses. I had lumbar fusion L4 to S1.Initially, I was worried to have the surgery and wasn't sure if it would help. That was a result of having first surgery in the same place. After visiting Dr. McCance and his excellence of diagnosis, I was convinced to go for it. And I'm very grateful that I did
Cory LevineI have never met a more caring doctor. He is highly skilled well known yet he serves common people like me and is upfront, honest and listens to all your concerns. I am sure he is the top in his field in New York. Being this is my first surgery I feel so calm and comfortable knowing he has my interest in mind and the skill level to make this turn out fine.
Because of Dr. Sean McCance, I am now able to walk again pain-free. He has given me a new lease on of life. I have never met such a dedicated and devoted doctor whose sole ambition seems to be saving lives and making them better. Needless to say, I highly recommend him. He recently operated on me for "spondylosis" and "spinal stenosis". For the past three and a half years I lived with agonizing pain and numbness in my leg and foot. I despaired of life after my condition worsened and I wasn't getting any solutions from the many doctors I went to until I met Dr. McCance. Dr.McCance swiftly and deftly diagnosed my problems and spent many hours with my husband and me going over everything in a very detailed and patient manner. He performed the difficult and delicate surgery brilliantly and he was the first one at my hospital bed at dawn every morning checking up on me as was his dedicated and highly skilled assistant, Diana Clemente and all of other conscientious excellent doctors at the hospital. Two months after surgery I am healing quickly and making great progress. I shall never stop thanking Dr. McCance for allowing me to walk again. I love going to his office; his staff from the darling receptionists to everyone else are so hardworking and kind and courteous. They truly love what they do!
Dr. McCance operated on my lumber spine (Discectomy and Laminectomy). Three weeks after surgery my back feels great. My leg feels 90% better (no pain, but I had severe nerve issues and the remaining 10% is expected to heal in time). He is an extremely knowledgable and professional. The same goes for his excellent staff. While no one wants to have back surgery; if you needed it, Dr. McCance is an excellent person to have the surgery.
I thought that it was time to write about my experience with Dr. McCance and to thank him for the relief from the lower back pain from which I have suffered for so long. After a failed surgery performed by a different surgeon two years prior to the one with Dr. McCance, I almost had resigned myself to the fact that I would be in pain for the rest of my life. However, at 62 years old, I decided to try one more time. Physical therapy, injections, and acupuncture had not worked for me, so I searched for the best spine surgeon in order to find out if I was a candidate for more surgery.I met Dr. Sean McCance after a prominent New York City physician recommended him highly. Immediately, I felt he understood my pain and that under his care, I would be safe. After medical tests to prove I was indeed a candidate, we came to the conclusion that surgery was the way to go. The options were weighed, should Dr. McCance operate on two discs or just one, would I lose too much flexibility if he worked on two discs, and could surgery on just one give me enough relief. His conclusion was that one disc would be sufficient, with a bone graft. My surgery was in late June, 2010; it now is late October, I have been completely pain free for almost two months, I stopped pain medication four weeks after surgery, and I have resumed a normal life; well what I now call normal; relief.Thank you, Dr. McCance,I would recommend you to anyone in back pain.
I had seen 3 doctors and all had the same opinion. Therefore, it was up to me to choose the doctor. I choose Dr. McCance because he seemed the most anal and detail focused. RESULT 100% no pain the day after the operation. It is only 2 weeks today, but as of today w/o pain. After a year of solid pain, i was given the best gift you could ever want.
I came to Dr. McCance to help me understand the contrary views of two leading hospitals and decide whether I should do surgery.I found him cool, utterly lacking in bedside manner.Maybe, faced with the opinions of some of the most respected surgeons, he just saw this as a political decision. He agreed that I should have surgery, never reviewed my Mris with me, and made me feel that he was utterly disinterested.
I was treated by Dr. McCance for 2 back issues that severely impacted my quality of life. Over the last 24 months, he has performed a C5-C7 ACDF and a L5-S1 PLIF. Both surgeries greatly improved my issues. Dr. McCance is extremely thorough and professional. He spent more than enough time ensuring I understood both procedures and answered all questions. He has exacting standards of all those involved with patient care. Diana, the PA in his office, does a great job. Hospital bureaucrats would rather follow his instructions even if not standard process than to question him. I view that as a positive. Based on my experience, Dr. McCance is EXTREMELY thorough and conservative before recommending for surgery. In both cases, I made the decision based on my quality of life and with full disclosure regarding possible outcomes and risks.
I WOULD RECOMMEND DR.MCCANCE TO ANYONE WHO HAS SERIOUS BACK PROBLEMS AND ALL OTHER ALTERNATIVE HAVE BEEN EXHAUST. AFTER 10 YEARS OF PAIN AND FALLING DOWN STAIRS I REALIZED THAT MY SITUATION WAS SERIOUS. TAHNKS TO DR.MCCANCE AND HIS TEAM TODAY I FEEL NO SUCH PAIN IN MY LEGS. IT WAS A BLESSING TO KNOW THAT SOMEONE OUT THERE CARES AND IS NOT IN IT FOR THE MONEY.
Before the surgery I had a constant sharp pain down my neck, around my right shoulder blade and down my right arm. Was not able to sleep, sitting or driving a car for a period of more then 15 minutes was impossible. After the surgery performed by Dr. McCance, I am now able to sleep comfortably again, I no longer have the pain from my neck to my arm, and sitting and driving are no longer a problem. I would recommend Dr. McCance to anyone.
I was in pain 24 7 for at least 5 years. Had one surgery before I heard of Dr. McCance. I was taking pains meds just to get out of bed. I was unable to go to a mall even on meds the flooring was just to hard on my body. At a wedding or any type of party you were always the one unable to dance and have a good time. After Dr. McCance did the surgery I am 100% pain free. I can do anything, if it wasn't for Dr. McCance I'm sure I would still be taking meds to function. I think of how lucky I am everyday, that a coworker mentioned his name in passing.
I had a failed spinal fusion at the age of 14 at Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. I am now 20 years old. Dr McCance operated on my spine to correct the first surgery after 4 years of severe chronic back pain and a countless number of doctors not knowing what was wrong with me or how to fix it. It did not take long for Dr. McCance to find the problem and know the solution. It is now 1 year after the revision and I am pain free. I would definitely reccommend him to anyone in serious need of relief from back pain. His bedside manner was very good and he showed care and concern for my condition and took time to answer all of my questions. He's a great surgeon and helped me when no one else could.
Dr. McCance is one the finest physicians I have ever met! He explained EVERYthing regarding my spine surgery in clear language, respected my fears, and was caring during my post-operative period. The surgery was a "100%" success, and I am once again upright and painfree. His support staff is as helpful and caring as he is, and again I thank them all for their kind consideration.
My diagnosis was Scoliosis,Stenosis, and Spondylotistesis . I only know I was in severe pain, siting in a wheelchair and unable to function. I put my trust in Dr. McCance and it was fulfilled. The operation was lenghty, and as my GP said this afternoon ,"It was indeed one of the worst cases of stenosis I have ever seen"I am living a fruiful life, minus the severe pain I had been experiencing. Dr. McCance seemed so delighted that the operation had indeed worked so well. He had been absolutely honest with me and I am so grateful for his skill.
For 14 months I could not walk 5 steps without bending over in nerve pain. Dr. McCance repaired my congenital stenosis> I am deeply grateful for his skill and for the support of his carefully chosen staff.
I had a very good experience with Dr. McCance and his staff they were both proffesional and very helpful.
Dr. McCance operated on my spine in 2006 - the operation was a complete success but I almost died due to complications unforeseen by any prior testing. I was allergic to the lavage (cleaning) that the blood bank blood goes through prior to transfusing. I went into complete organ failure after the surgery and it was Dr. McCance's dedication and expertise that I am alive to write this glowing report. He worked tirelessly with the other medical personnel in the hospital to keep me alive and was available to my sons every minute of every day. I am a walking, emphasis on walking, specimen of a doctor's commitment and perseverance. I thank him every day.
extremely late, awful bedside manner, rushed through, didn't answer questions, seemed completely uninterested, was told took insurance didn't realize i needed to ask "are you in network" and was charged $500 for the visit as it did not go against my insurance. after complaining i was told to pay $250. beware
