Patient Reviews ? Write a Review
By far one of the smartest doctors I have had the pleasure of knowing and having treated me medically when others had failed.
The most self centered person I know. Patients are strongly encouraged to view his DVD where he tells how smart he is! He spends less than 5 min.per pt. He doesn't have time to talk to pt or family. All he does is prescribe medicine. He had me on TOO much! I ended up in ICU with seizures due to too much med.!
I saw this doctor in absense of my regular doctor and he actually took the time to talk to me unlike my regular doctor. We actually found that I was placed on a med I did not need and that was causing some severe side effects. He took me off of it and placed me on something way better and I couldn't have been more gracious. I would recommend anyone to see this guy. I wish he were my regular.
Dr. Van Horn is my very favorite Dr. Since I've been seeing him I have not tried to take my life. Even though he has moved to Fort Mill I have followed him because I know he will still take good care of me. God blessed me with the best dr. ever!
I never had an appt. in his office. I had the misfortune of him being my doctor as a pt. in The Lighthouse.
I have been suffering from Severe Depression, Anxiety, etc for many years. I have seen many psychiatrists who were unable to help me. Dr. Van Horn immediately started me down a path which has been successful. I continue to see him to get everything right. He has been wonderful. Also, I love Crystal....she is awesome!!! Completely satisfied!!!
The doctor has helped me immensely. I was very sick when I first came to see him. I am myself once again thanks to Dr. Van Horn. The staff is excellent.
My Husband's primary doctor Dr. Philip Nicols referred my husband to Dr. Van Horn. My husband has been diagnosed with Cerebrovascular Disease and PTSD, with his flash backs and confusion states Dr. Van Horn has changed his outlook and his attitude. He is a miracle worker as far as we are concerned. No VA doctors would help, but Dr. Van Horn does and gives so much, with his care, and concern.
Over the past 25 years I have been to several Psychiatrists in 3 different states. Dr. Van Horn has helped me so much with my severe depression, sleeplessness and my constant back pain. His initial video stated facts about what you could expect from him during your visits and I happen to like that. I have been in talk therapy with meds for the full 25 years and I am so done with that. He states in his video that is not what he does and if you need talk therapy also the office will assist you in finding one. I found him to be sensitive to my medication and how it was working. Just by the questions I answered on the initial forms and his observations he knew exactly what type of of person I was and what my needs were. I think he is an amazing doctor and Crystal, the office manager, is the most organized, efficient and sweetest person I have ever known.
As a caregiver, has made my life so much easier by prescribing and tracking the affects of all the right meds for my husband who is in mid-late stage lewy body dementia.
Dr Van Horn is the best Dr that I've found. I've had severe Depression since a child, being in hospitals and trying to commit suicide frequently. The depression was so bad no one could help me.Then I met Dr. Van Horn while in the hospital. He really listened to me, got me on the right meds and i haven't been in the hospital or tried suicide for 3 years.i really appreciate his kindness-he's the best!
The most memorable thing about my care from Dr. Van Horn is his expertise with medicine and mental illnesses. I have been seeking help for twenty years after having post partem with my first child of five. I have never been given the time, testing, and educational material that I received from Dr. Van Horn. If it was not for his expert medical advice I would be over drugged and have no quality of life. I am free of all suicidal thoughts and functioning on the highest level of mental health since I was twenty. You will never find a doctor that cares more about you as an individual. And on top of that he is thorough and hits the bullseye with medicine. My brain is clear and I am sleeping great and I have a great quality of life with my husband and children that range from 24 to 11 years of age. I am alive and truly living because of this amazing doctor. I highly recommend him to you if you want to live and live fully.
I should have reviewed the complaints against this doctor before bringing my family member to him. I gave him all the past medical tests etc. and this doctor never read them, he never tested my family member in any form and than diagnosis him with attention deficit, which years of testing and self contained special education classes clearly state is not the issue. It is my intention to file formal charges against him as I can prove he never tested my family member and misdiagnosed him, making it so that my family member cannot get any help. This man should not be in practice and I have nothing but time on my hands to see he can't run and hide in another state. Do not trust this man.
I developed psychosis a few years back. I tried a slew of medicines, but none of them seemed to have a strong effect. Finally Dr. Van Horn prescribed me on the last resort, which causes weight gain. Sure enough I barely hear voices anymore! I'm getting my weight under control now with healthier shopping and exercise, so if anything I'm healthier because of the medicine. Anyone who complains that they aren't seen long enough should find another doctor, but to me, I really like getting in and out with a few questions to see how progress is going. Two thumbs up to getting me back to reality! Thank you doctor!
He was my doctor @ Conway. My insurance pd. 10 days, I stayed 10 days! Everybody was put on the same meds no matter what diagnosis he gave you. He spent Aprox 5 min. With each pt. as we all sat in a circle in the dining area. I never got to say or ask anything. He really doesn't know his meds. Like he brags that he does! Actually I think he knows how much $ he can get out of each pt. I looked up the few things he did tell me & either he's not very smart or just lied about the info. He should be disbarred & run out of S.C. Too! Heard he's not at Lighthouse now. Hope that's true!
Very friendly staff. Very intimidating video in a small room given to many patients to advise and test for alzheimer disease. Many of his patients are now in that category. He used to deal entirely with adolescents on drugs. His manor is brief, to the point, and limited to about 15 minutes. Not a therapeutic setting, i.e. not unfriendly, but do not expect long conversations on background issues. Provides drug intervention.....that's it. Is knowledgeable of various drugs, but his intervention was not effective in my case.
The best method of treatment is not doping elderly patients. Three (3) types of anti-psychotic drugs for a frail 85 year old patient along with sleeping pills.
Dr. Van Horn has been a blessing for my family. Before seeing him my husband was miserable with life and so were we(his family). My husband was on the wrong meds and after seeing Dr. Van Horn one time and getting on the correct meds, he has done great. Dr. Van Horn is patient and easy to talk to. I am so glad we are with him now.
I had lost all hope for ever feeling well again. I went to 3 hospitals and several of the "best" doctors in N.Y. for the past 5 yrs. and was still sick. Life was not worth living. Then I met Dr. Vanhorn. With the changes he made, I felt better the first week and I'm living my life again. Thank you god and thank you Dr. VANHORN.
I wanted to give him 0 stars! He cares 0 about his patients except their insurance! I was a pt. at (HIS!) Light House! Saw him less than 5 min. a day & that was in Day Room with the other patients. He didn't want to waste his time answering his patient's questions. I was very afraid of him, even after I got home. He threatened to commit any one that gave him problems to an additional 3 weeks. He is a weird, scary man. I heard he is no longer @ The Lighthouse & really hope it is true! In spite of him getting good reviews( still find it hard to believe that anything positive was said about him), DON'T GO TO HIM!!!
I was referred to this Dr by my Grandmother , which had been a patient of his for years . I was new to the area , and needed refills on my medication . My first impression was bad , because I was put in a room with a tv watching videos about Dr Van Horn , and who he is . I thought that was absurd for thirty minutes of an introduction on video . I thought well perhaps he is worth the wait . He came in , and asked me questions . He asked me if I had been sexually abused over , and over again . Then when I told him I needed a refill on my medicine . He said he wanted to switch me to a medication that I had tried prior , and did not like . I have been on the same medicine for over ten years so you would think lowering the does then switching would be best . So we agreed to disagree until I was up front waiting to check out . He came to the waiting area where there were people behind me , and said " Come back , and see me when you start to feel like sh*t from the pills you take " REALLY ??? I said you went to med school , and the best word you could come up with is sh*t ? Really sad . He is a horrible medical professional to say that to any patient especially in front of several other people . Stay away from this ignorant person .
After switching through several psychiatrists I had no trust in them. I was basically going so I wouldn't lose my job. I left the first appointment unsure this would be any different. After a struggle with finding the right medicine I felt better. Dr. VanHorn helped me feel normal again. Then when I crashed hard he was there with immediate crisis for me appointments and a new plan. He wanted to take me off a benzodiazepine that another dr had started and I trusted him. He waited and continued to prescribe it until he knew I was able to stop and then he slowly weaned me off the drug. He has helped me have a normal life again. I highly recommend Dr. VanHorn.
My husband has been seeing Dr. Van Horn for almost a year and we have seen real improvement in his functioning and in our quality of life. He does not spend a lot of time with his patients, but he is a good listener and makes adjustments in medication when necessary. His office returns calls in a timely manner and will see you on short notice if necessary.
Dr. Van Horn saved my life. Three years ago I was diagnosed with a chemical imbalance in my brain. He prescribed medication that changed my life and I will be eternally grateful to him. I have asked about certain medications, mostly over the counter, and he has told me if they are, as he puts it, "bad for the brain". I always listen to him because I trust him completely. He's a great man and a wonderful doctor.
Over the past several years Dr. Van Horn has successfully diagnosed and treated my problem where others in the same field had failed. He was very thorough and professional. I look forward to it continuing to be the same in the future.
Moved here almost two years ago from another state. I was so worried about changing doctors. However, when my family doctor recommended Dr. VanHorn I was very pleased withj his expertise in treating my symptoms. We discuss my options together which makes me feel like he does really care. Thank you Dr. VanHorn for helping me get my life back. See you soon!!!
Dr. Van Horn listens and if we think a medication doesn't work or has negative side effects he will change it. He makes recommendations on other things as well. Example, I was given Tramadol for pain when I broke my hip and he advised getting off it as soon as possible because it acts like a narcotic.
i liked dr. van horn the first five minutes in his office. he is right to point and explained the type of treatment that is best for me. i have followed his instructions and advise for six weeks and have made remarkable progress and will continue to see him. he is a great doctor and i would recommend him to my friends and family.
Been seeing Dr Vanhorn for over 6 months. I have chronic back and hip pain and on prescription opiates and narcotics from my ortho Dr since 2006. have been suffering with increasing anxiety OCD and depression. Over my time visiting Dr Vanhorn he has helped me ease off or somewhat cutback from these painkillers and medications that were causing me increasing anxiety depression and he has helped me so much I recommend him 100 percent. But you have to be willing to follow his recommendations for it to work. I still have chronic orthopedic pain but my depression and anxiety have way decreased at times I may have to take my painkillers but way much less
Dr. Van Horn has helped me and my family so much! It's been an incredibly difficult year since my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. I'm just thankful that Dr. Van Horn was recommended to us by a friend "in the know" - He's amazing!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Dr. VanHorn's approach is to correct the problem not to mask the symptoms. Noticed small improvement in my condition within one week of going on the medications he prescribed. In the past four months I have been seeing Dr. Van Horn, my quality of life has improved drastically. I almost feel normal again. While I would like to feel like a 40 year old, the fact is I am 65 and am happy to feel 65 instead of the 80 yr old I used to feel like. I am sleeping again, my energy levels are very good, my ability to focus is better, my verbal skills have improved and my memory has even improved. Problems don't occur overnight so don't expect overnight fixes. Dr. Van Horn cares about his patients. We have never had to wait longer than 5 min. After three months with another neurologist, when I was unable to take the recommended drugs for Alzheimers and what he prescribed for sleep didn't work, he recommended a drug that we found out later that only worked in conjunction with the drug I was unable to take. Dr. Van Horn was recommended to us by the Alzheimers Assoc. I am so grateful to Dr. VanHorn for the quality of life that has been restored to me. He gives you realistic expectations. If I could rate him 20 stars I would.
The office is well ran. You do not have to wait to be seen more than 10 minutes. Dr. V is direct, listens well, and apparently very knowledgable. I like him. He uses Rx in low dosages at first and increases as needed. He writes down instructions for you to take home with you. I believe he sincerely wants to help you.
I have severe depression and anxiety. I had 5 doctors treating me over the past 10 years. Unfortunately the medications being perscribed were quick fixes to the symptoms but were causing long term damage with memory loss and hightened anxiety. He immediately changed my medications, ensuring no withdrawal symptoms. Within one week, changes were already becoming apparent. I wioul recommend him to anyone who really wants to get better and is willing to have an open mind to the changes required.
I have been with this doctor for a while because we are trying to solve and cure the voices I hear in my head from a brain related issue. He has been with us the whole time and been a very excellent doctor. He takes a small amount of time to explain himself, but he does it very well and gets the point across convincingly. We haven't been able to cure the voices I hear yet, but we are trying different medications and he is very educated in the medications he chooses. I would recommend him to anyone with the problem I am having.
Looked at me and told me I needed to be committed???? I have a sick husband, elderly father, and other sick relatives depending on me. Yes, I am stressed--he had me crying in a few seconds. What is wrong with this man?? He is scary--I have never had such a horrible experience with any doctor. Be very cautious with this man.
Dr. Vanhorn is an excellent Psychiatrist. He's professional, caring, thorough, experienced, level-headed, kind, concerned, compassionate, and best of all, he's resourceful. He wants to see clients take action and get better and he seems to have all kinds of good advice. It is up to the clients to just do it but if people are willing to take action then they'd do very well to see Dr. Vanhorn because he will guide them to a better life.
Dr. Van Horn is absolutely amazing and has helped improved not only my life but my entire family's life. He is very busy which makes the shortness of the visit's understandable, but he absolutely knows what he is doing with medicine and will help anyone who can wait more than a minute to get stabilized on the right drugs. He does not believe in giving prescriptions for highly addictive drugs (thank goodness), unlike so many other doctor's out there! I feel that those who have bad things to say about him are not being patient enough to see the results. I have multiple family members who suffer from chemical depression and Dr. Van Horn has treated them and they are now doing wonderfully! GO SEE DR. VAN HORN IF YOU WANT FANTASTIC PSYCHOLOGICAL CARE!!!
I've taken my mother to many different Alzheimer's doctors over the past year. The level of compassion that Dr. Van Horn has shown my family has truly been a blessing. All the questions that we had were answered and he was able to keep her calm and happy. Other doctors had her on crazy combinations of medication that really seemed to make her sickness worse. I would highly recommend Dr. Van Horn.
I am a lady of 77 years and have been a patient of many doctors down through the years. Most of my doctors have been kind and caring individuals, but not what I consider the very "best doctor" for reasons known only to me. When I met Dr. VanHorn he listened to what I had to say and then he asked questions that I was able to answer. He then prescribed medications of which I had very little knowledge together with some lifestyle changes. He was quite direct and spent all the time he needed with me. While taking the medicine and following his instructions I began to feel better and still do, more than a year later. Thank you, Dr. VanHorn.
When I first met Dr Van Horn I was at a point in my life where I knew I needed to get off perscription drugs and I felt I was led to him as I thought I was seeing a regular physc to talk to which is not what he does. He is short and to the point. He gives you maybe 5 minutes of his time and then he is gone. I had to watch a movie of him telling me how he works and what kind of treatment he gives. He does not talk to you to help he works with the brain and drugs effect the your individual problem. At first I was not happy with him. I thought he was shallow, ecotistical, and rude. Now that I have seen him over a spell I can appreciate what he actually does for me. And If I want to go and talk with someone I can go and speak with someone that does that kind of thing.
he is a very bad doctor. He does not care at all and he is very mean.He is trying to keep his patients for a long time and he been trying to give my mother different medications but thatnk god she does not take it. I also heard that he been sued before in different state and he moved here to get a job.Dont go to him he is the worst doctor ever.
I think this man likes billing for office visits rather than taking time with his patients. If we got 10 minutes with him during our office visit, we were lucky. He talks very fast, doesn't give you a chance to ask any additional questions and is out the door before you process his comments. If he sends a family member to the Lighthouse, don't expect them to get out anytime soon. I do not trust this man nor his intentions.
Dr. Vanhorn helped my grandfather seem like himself again and I would recommend him to anyone who has dementia or early memory loss. Amazing!
Liked NOTHING about this doctor! He never spent over 5 min. With any patiens and that was in a group setting. Hippa rules ignored as were patient rights. I was unfortunate enough to be assigned to this man and be a patient @ HIS hospital(?). It was the most afraid I have ever been.
Made 3 min. vs. in "meeting room" with all pts. present. NEVER had a private meeting & the only thing he did was ask his name, date & where we were. If a pt. didn't follow his rules they were threatned with 3 wks. of involuntary commitment. I'm scared of him!
Took me 22 years to find a doctor like him. After seeing over 75, finally, I got to the Dr. I needed. My treatment plan is great, and I have full confidence in his ability to diagnose and treat his patients. Thank you, Dr. Van Horn, for helping me LIVE my life.
