A phlebologist is a physician who is trained to diagnose and treat conditions of the veins.
Most often, these doctors treat varicose veins, spider veins and skin ulcers. Phlebologists diagnose vein disorders through physical exam, ultrasound to see the structure of the vein, or a venogram to look at the blood flow through the vein.
Once diagnosed, phlebologists will treat a vein disorder with compression stockings that apply pressure in order to correct blood flow, sclerotherapy, which is when a chemical is injected into the vein in order to destroy it, radiofrequency and laser treatments to seal the vein, or surgery to remove the vein.
