Dr. Sung-Kiang Chuang, DDS

Yesterday I went to have a tooth extracted by Dr. Chuang. When I called to make the appointment, I made it very clear that I need to be sedated due to a very low pain tolerance and a high anxiety level regarding oral surgery. I was assured that this would not be a problem. When I arrived at my appointment, I reiterated to Dr. Chuang’s staff that I would be needing sedation. The staff member informed me that I would “not be asleep” for the procedure, but that I would be “lightly sedated.” I informed them that I did not wish to go through with the extraction and started to leave the office. A staff member followed me to the waiting room and proceeded to discuss my personal health information in front of the other patients – a blatant HIPAA violation. The staff offered to let me speak to Dr. Chuang prior to making my final decision. Dr. Chuang assured me that I would be sedated, and that he would stop the procedure immediately if at any time I did not wish to continue. I reluctantly… agreed to go ahead with the extraction, because I had already waited a month for my appointment, and I had cleared my schedule to be there. When Dr. Chuang gave me the drugs to sedate me, I immediately realized something was wrong. I have been under sedation multiple times for various procedures and have always responded very well to the sedation. I have never even had any recollection of the procedures. Dr. Chuang gave me so little of the drugs, they did not have any effect at all. I informed everyone in the room that I was not properly sedated. He started to pull the tooth anyway, and I immediately told him to stop. He did not. I was sobbing and screaming in pain the entire time. I managed to ask him what he was doing (meaning why was he continuing when he had promised to stop if I couldn’t handle it) and he snapped angrily “What am I doing? I’m pulling your tooth!” One of the assistants who was standing behind me commented “unbelievable, this is ridiculous!” After the procedure I was promised that Dr. Chuang would call a prescription in to the pharmacy, as I was already in immense pain, but he did not do so, nor did he contact me about it. It was an absolutely horrific experience and I strongly urge anyone who is considering going to Dr. Chuang to reconsider. The only positives I can offer are that the on-call doctor and the woman at the front desk were very kind.
