Meet Dr. Barkley
Dr. Mary Barkley is a life-long Michigan resident – she grew up in Flushing, Michigan, near Flint. She received her dental degree from the University of Michigan in 1984, and her orthodontic degree from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1986. She has practiced orthodontics in Chelsea since 1987.
Dr. Barkley is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. This is a voluntary examination process, in which an orthodontist presents treated cases and undergoes an oral exam. Involvement in the certification process is a demonstration of the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence. For more information on ABO certification,

Dr. Barkley is very involved in leadership of the orthodontic community – she served as President of the Michigan Association of Orthodontists in 1997, and as President of the Great Lakes Association of Orthodontists (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Ontario and western …Pennsylvania) in 2008. She continues to serve on committees and councils of the American Association of Orthodontists.
Dr. Barkley and her husband, Gregory, have two sons, Dan and Brian, who are both in college.
Dr. Barkley would like everyone to know that she loves being an orthodontist! “Providing orthodontic treatment is like putting a puzzle together,” she says. “I have so many puzzle pieces to assemble for each patient – jaw size, tooth size, jaw growth, facial profile. And then I get to design the orthodontic treatment that will most benefit each patient’s different puzzle pieces!”
