Dr. Folan
Matthew H. Folan DMD, a graduate of both the University of Georgia (Athens) and the Medical College of Georgia's School of Dentistry (Augusta), relocated to Savannah in 2008 when he arranged to purchase the practice of Dr. Stephen Acuff, one of Savannah's most prominent dentists for more than 30 years. Dr. Folan and his wife, the former Lesley Strickland of Albany, Georgia, felt immediately at home in their new city. Savannah's proximity to the ocean, its comfortable pace, and its warm and gracious people all make it the perfect place for the Folans to raise their two children, Meg and Jack.
Dr. Folan is a true general/family practitioner with expertise in:
• Restorative dentistry (fillings)
• Fixed prosthodontics (crowns, bridges, veneers, implant abutments/crowns)
• Removable prosthodontics (dentures and partials)
• Endodontics (root canals)
• Oral surgery (extractions and surgical extractions)
• Periodontics (gums and supporting structures)
• Pediatric …dentistry (children)
His treatment approach is to use the least invasive interventions necessary to do the job. He will avoid doing a full bridge if a single implant will do. He will avoid veneers if chemical bleaching will do. Dr. Folan's patients are assured that all treatment plans have the patient's long-term health and well-being as the only concern. Dr. Folan takes seriously the principle "first do no harm." His professional ethics preclude performing any invasive procedure unless it is medically indicated. For this reason, Dr. Folan does not engage in "cosmetic dentistry"that compromises healthy teeth unnecessarily.
Dr. Folan's professional memberships include the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association/ Southeastern District, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He is also committed to philanthropic service. He sits on the board of the Coastal Children's Advocacy Center, is active in his Rotary Club, is a member of the Emerging Leaders Committee of the Savannah Community Foundation, and is an active member of Wesley Monumental Methodist Church. His volunteer dental initiatives, described in the "Giving Back" section, include outreach to Savannah's homeless population and an annual service mission to Central America.
Along with crabbing, fishing, and going to the beach with his family, Dr. Folan makes a mean pot of chili and enjoys the occasional round of golf.
