Dr. Richard Kelly Straus

I had a chipped tooth that needed a root canal, build and crown. Cindy the assistant to Dr Straus was amazing. She told me about the procedures and help me be more relaxed for the procedure. Dr Straus was amazing and told me step by step about what to expect. If I had to have another root canals, This group would be my first choice. Amazing Staff!

Dr. Struas did good work when he solely worked on my mouth. Questionable though in steering me in the right direction and when his assistants made mistakes. Went in for a crown and he sold me the most expensive crown($950) when the standard crown for their office was ($750). I thought we settled on the most durable which was $750. His assistant ground the crown all the way to the metal and there was no contact. He sent me along my way. I came back and he did not want to fix it. I nicely asked that he correct it still did not want to fix it but finally did when I said that it was simply ground down too far. He did do a good job on all the prep work for the crown. He did a filling once because I chipped the filling, he did a good job. At a cleaning the hygenist broke bonding on a permanant retainer and left stains on my teeth. He did fix that but when his bonding came off he did not want to fix it. Recently I had three teeth and fillings damaged during cleaning and polishing.… He sent me home with a perfect check-up and I returned a few days later and he told me how severe the damage was on one tooth. He smoothed one filling out. Told me I needed a crown on the one that was so chipped up from the polishing. He did not want to fix this tooth nor the other two. I asked why I was not told about the damaged teeth at checkup and he said that if he told patients about every little problem that they would not come back?? Wanted to put a crown on one tooth and do a $130 filling on the other. I called in pain to his home and was not treated very kindly. Insisted that there was no damage done at cleaning and checkup and there was no way that I could have any damage with polishing. I saw all over the internet from studies and the American dental hygenists asociation that the polishing cup and course paste could do damage. He finally offered to do two fillings for free and I offered to split the cost. He told me that they would call me the next day and set up a time. They offered me an appointment about 3 or 4 weeks off, knowing that I was in pain from the tooth that was severely chipped up. All trust was gone at that point and I cancelled the appointment. Was treated terrribly when I went to pick up my x-rays. The next day I went for a second opinion and the dentist said that I did need two fillings but whoever said that I needed a crown on one of the teeth was wrong and was trying to sell something that I did not need. The second opinion went well, but I did not let that dentist fix the two teeth because he wanted to put in mercury fillings. I went to a young dentist out of town who graduated from The University of Alabama dental school and gets great reviews. He said that there was no way I needed a crown of the tooth filling that was chipped so bad. he replaced the filling and replaced the other filling that had a hole ground in it. My new dentist did a perfect job and the pain that started instantly at the cleaning where my teeth were chipped at Dr. Straus's office went away instantly when it was properly fixed. That has been a few months ago. I now have a great dentist. By the way I have not had a cavity in almost 4 years now and always got good checkups every 6 or 8 months. Just had alot of damge done by assitants and from hygenists. I actually had a hole ground in a filling years ago by an assistant trimming down a high spot after a filling and had a notch ground in the side of a tooth at a filling years ago at another dentists office. Overall the work that Dr. Straus performed by himself was good but alot of damage was done over a 3 and half year time period and he did not want to fix mistakes until I had to haggle with him and insist. On another occasion the front desk refused to take a Care credit card because it was in my fathers name. Care credit is for all family members of the cardholder and even their pets. Alot of questionable things went on.
