Dr. Rubina Khatoon

Extremely professional. Fixed my tooth borderline pain free. Will definitely be seeing her again.

I did a considerable amount of research before deciding to try Dr. Khatoon. Many dentists don't have a ton of info on them, but the reviews weren't terrible on Dr. Khatoon and she went to NYU School of Dentistry (my alma mater and a very good dental school) so I thought I would give her a try. It was urgent and she had an appointment available at the end of the week. The office, at the end of a nearly vacant strip mall, had a weird feel to it. The TV was blaring, there were no patients or their families. The space looked a bit worn down with old unused hardware still in the wall on one side and a wallpaper mural with peeling the edges. There was a weird driving lesson window to the right of the reception window, too, giving the whole thing that little bit extra David Lynch feel. The absence of other patients/people seemed odd as it can often take months to get into good dentists and when I made the appointment, I was told this afternoon space was the next available… appointment. Then there were the forms. There were a couple of standard forms and almost three pages of disclaimers that needed to be initialed. Each paragraph requiring initials was dedicated to a different aspect of or full procedure including anesthesia, fillings, dentures, extractions, root canals, etc. Each paragraph asserted in one form or another that the patient understands that anything can happen in any procedure, that things can go wrong, that other unforeseen procedures can be required and that the dentist will do whatever she wants. Again, THREE pages worth! I've never signed such an extensive indemnity form for a filling! I initialed many but was not comfortable initialing those that were not relevant and so noted instead "will initial as required and approved by insurance and myself." The receptionist assured me that Dr. Khatoon wouldn't do anything without talking to me first, giving a full price and seeing what insurance would pay for first. Another man who had been eating within eye and ear shot of the front desk window came by and explained that there was no accounts receivable so I would never be stuck with a bill. It was then explained that all payments must be made before a procedure will be done so there was no need for accounts receivable and nothing would be done before payment was received. That was all new to me, but again, I knew my insurance covered fillings and this doctor, so I wasn't worried. The guy at the front desk was very nice, as was another lady that worked there from Brooklyn who chatted with me while I waited. After about 15 minutes, the receptionist came back out and told me the doctor wasn't comfortable seeing me because of the dentist I had been to before her. When I pressed for details he explained that Dr. Khatoon had pulled a tooth for a patient that had been to a dentist in Lowville (that I had also been to previously). The patient apparently had some problem with the extraction and went back to the dentist in Lowville who said the tooth shouldn't have been pulled at all. He notified Medicaid and helped the patient sue Dr. Khatoon. I assured the receptionist that I wouldn't be going back to the Lowville dentist and that this was my last chance to get this filling done for quite some time. He was very empathetic and said he would check with her, but as I waited I realized that there was something not quite right about this dentist, the way she operates, her lack of consideration for her patients (I had to drive 1/2 hour each way to get to her and told them of the urgency as my filling came out at the beginning of the week and needed replacing as it was a big one.) Additionally, if another dentist was willing to report her to Medicaid because she was pulling teeth without cause to get more money (extractions and fillings are about all Medicaid will pay for) and her forms made it seem as though she would do whatever she wanted and patients just had to accept it... I told the receptionist I changed my mind and all things considered, was not comfortable seeing her either. I don't know the quality level of the dental work she does, but I wouldn't be shocked if something else all together was going on in this office. Something is just not right.

dr khatoon is very caring, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. i like her.

I love her!!!! Hope she doesn't change... Seems to happen to me once I say someone is good... As long as she stays humble...
