He continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, where he graduated with the title of Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM), and received the Elliot Brodie Award for Clinical Excellence, awarded to a graduating dental student who shows outstanding skill and talent in the field of dentistry. Dr. Smolarek then completed his General Practice Residency Program with the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

In addition to private practice, Dr. Smolarek has been an attending dentist for the Erie County Medical Center's Dental Residency Program.
