More about Dr. Daniel David Bohl

Daniel Bohl, MD (danielbohl.com), is a nationally renowned orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon who is a professor at Midwest Orthopaedics at RUSH. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts, making him one of the most prolific orthopaedic surgeons in the world.

Dr. Bohl is a team surgeon for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox.

As a physician, he specializes in all bone, joint, tendon, ligament, muscle, nerve, and sports conditions below the knee. He has particular interests in foot and ankle fractures, arthritis, bunions, the Achilles tendon, flat foot, peroneal tendons, nerve problems, recurrent ankle sprains, and sports injuries. He further specializes in correcting failed surgery and revision procedures.

Dr. Bohl attended Yale School of Medicine, from which he graduated with the highest honors for his work to minimize orthopaedic complications. He did a five-year residency in orthopaedic surgery at Rush. After residency, he completed subspecialty training at the prestigious orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery fellowship at Baylor in Dallas.

From a research perspective, Dr. Bohl runs a cutting-edge laboratory in which he trains residents, fellows, and scientists on research methods, study design, and orthopaedic practice. His laboratory develops and evaluates new surgical techniques and characterizes the utility of new implants and procedures. He has designed and led important single- and multi-center randomized controlled trials. Dr. Bohl’s research has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, Northwestern University, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, Yale School of Medicine, Mid-American Orthopaedic Association, University of California at Berkeley, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and several industry sponsors. His work has received more than 15 awards from societies, institutions, and journals.

Dr. Bohl is a pioneer in the use of minimally invasive surgery (tiny and cosmetic incisions). In particular, he uses cutting edge techniques to treat Achilles tendon ruptures, bunions, and other conditions. For all procedures, Dr. Bohl believes in precise management with small and cosmetic incisions to minimize tissue damage and facilitate return to activity.

As part of his role on the faculty at Rush, Dr. Bohl trains other orthopaedic surgeons. He is one of the key faculty in the residency training program at Rush, which fosters 25 surgeons-in-training at any given time. The foot and ankle division also maintains a one-year orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery fellowship, for which Dr. Bohl provides a critical component of the education.

Dr. Bohl gives back to the orthopaedic community through academic service. He is on the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Research Committee, for which he evaluates grant applications and directs research funding each year. He is also a peer-reviewer, determining which scientific manuscripts should be published for six major academic journals, including his subspecialty’s top journal (Foot and Ankle International) and the top journal in all of medicine (The Lancet).

Whether you’re traveling from out-of-state or visiting from within the city, Dr. Bohl is excited to see you in consultation for your foot or ankle condition. His friendly staff will work hard to make your visit efficient and productive. He will not rest until he has thoroughly educated you about your condition, exhausted all nonoperative treatment, and/or solved your condition with surgery.
