Dr. Jagpreet Kaur Sekhon

My first appointment with Dr. Sekhon left me feeling heard, understood, and respected- until I read her note and tried to follow up about multiple items she had wrong, some of which needed imminent addressing and attending to, at which point the typical narcissist doctor persona revealed itself. Among many other items, she had recommended that my dosage of bupropion be increased due to recent progression of depression plus catatonia, but the dose she was recommending turned out to be what I was already taking, clearly written in my chart. When I wrote her that it was the current amount, she asked if I wanted to double my dose to 300 mg, despite having expressed concern about the “increase” from 100 to 150 potentially causing anxiety. I addressed the side effect concern and she wrote back “explaining” that it might cause the anxiety we talked about and said it was up to me. At this point I suggested an iron panel to see if low iron stores might be the source of my symptoms since it… had been low at last testing and I was on a med that could have further reduced it, and she ignored this said we would have to wait until my next exam more than a month out to discuss “medication changes.” Meanwhile she was having me get a somewhat suspicious lymph node ultrasounded to see if I had lymphoma, which can also cause those symptoms. That was scheduled for the following week. To me it made sense to get a baseline iron panel just prior to ultrasound, but because it was my idea and not hers, she chose to ignore reason and say I was “welcome to find another PCP if I wanted.” When I said “please don’t make me find another PCP this week; I have too much on my plate already,” she pretended I was in agreement and moved forward to end our “patient relationship,” citing “breakdown in communication” and “lack of trust in her treatment recommendations.” This experience is extremely discouraging because I had spent a good amount of time during our appointment outlining how doctors had behaved this way with me throughout my life and especially in the past couple years as I have navigated more age-related matters, and she had expressed sympathy and said I wouldn’t have to worry about that with her. The outcome makes me not want to bother living anymore because I have to rely on doctors to get basic needs met.
