Summary

My Specialty and Why I Chose It

My journey into psychiatry began long before I made the decision to practice in the field. Born in a developing country to a family of physicians, nurses and midwives, I was exposed to medical sciences at an early age. Internal Medicine and pediatrics had become "natural" choice but I often found myself fascinated with the mind-body connection. Of particular interest has been the theme of resilience, strength and re-growth in the face of stress and trauma.

My Practice Philosophy

My philosophy reflects my Asian roots, with an openness to Western influence. Psychiatry is a science and an art.

There is a role for medications, therapy and behavioral modification. The unique combination should be tailor-made for each individual, with the patient as a partner in formulating his or her treatment.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I joined Kaiser Permanente in February 2005 and look forward to many productive and meaningful years with the institution.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

In the brief period I’ve been with Kaiser Permanente, I have had the pleasure of working with staff who are highly competent, sensitive and empathetic. Coordinating care with physicians in other fields has been a positive experience and this, I believe, translates to a higher quality of service for our patients.

On a Personal Note…

During my residency training in New York City, I served as chief resident during my senior year. It was fast-paced, challenging and often called the training for the "Marines of Medicine". From the inner city, soul food and jazz, I moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, home of Little League Baseball. Part of my practice there was taking care of the Amish and the Mennonite population, the other part was hospital and office-based, as a medical director of outpatient services. I interviewed in almost a dozen facilities on both coasts before choosing Kaiser Permanente. For a growing number of reasons, I continue to believe I made the right decision for me and my family.
