A loved one had a week long stay at Mayo clinic and was told her symptoms didn't fit a typical pattern of any known diseases and was given about 5-8 different possibilities. The group of doctors there told us how sorry they were to have to dismiss her without giving us a diagnosis but that this was one of the most complicated cases and the symptoms were probably from more than one problem. She transferred to Espay to have someone closer to home. He reviewed her records, examined her for 10 minutes, diagnosed Lewy Bodies, and said "there is nothing medicine can do for you but I'd like for you to consider brain donation upon death to help with research". When we pointed out the differences to "typical" Lewy Bodies he twisted our report of symptoms and timeline to a typical Lewy Bodies. We continued to ask questions, but he was finished. I later sent a letter stating how upsetting it was to have him tell us there was no hope and to discuss brain donation on the 1st visit. He… replied that obviously he was not the right doctor for us. I hope he at least self-evaluated and never did that to anyone again. It's a year later and she may or may not have Lewy Bodies. She's doing well, still walking w/o assistance, still no hallucinations, playing basketball :-) and living life to her symptom ridden 81 year old fullest.

Dr. Espay has a delightful personality - always upbeat, giving hope and solutions to health problems. He is a great listener and is on the cutting edge of research and treatments. It is obvious he cares deeply for his patients.

There is not a more caring, devoted and knowledgeable doctor. I have Parkinson's disease and have always been amazed by Dr. Espay's care.

Dr. Espay is the most caring, attentive and scholarly specialist we have ever encountered in our over-seventy- years on this planet. He says, "Medicine is my life!", and we say, God is in his Medicine. He has a true Calling, and he follows it diligently. We highly recommend him to our loved ones.
