Dr. Amy Rebecca Benjamin, MD

12 yrs. ago - wish I had read reviews here and on the healthgrades website for Amy Benjamin before I let her operate on me, I would have found a different doctor. I'll try to be short & to the point. At the time I saw her, I knew I had endometriosis, she did some test, including an ultrasound, and told me there was the possibility I had ovarian cancer in 1 ovary. The surgery was to remove just that 1 ovary. I even signed a consent form stating such and that nothing else would be done unless there was a life threatening emergency that came up and additional medical intervention was needed. Surgery went well, no complications, but Amy took it upon herself to remove my other ovary because (the reason she gave me was that) she didn't want to have to remove the other one a year later. At the time when I woke up from my surgery, my then fiancé, was the one who told me that she took out both ovaries. I had to summon Amy to my room to find out why she took out both because she never came… in to check on me. This was a devastating event for me. On top of that, she never even told me that because of what she did, that would throw me into medical menopause; my chiropractor explained that to me!! Since I can't give her a zero rating, I have to give her a 1.

I paid a lot of money out of pocket for nothing. She tried to convince me I was not swollen I only felt swollen. My chronic yeast and BV was ignored as a source of swelling. My appointments consisted of trying to be convinced to get nerve blocks under CT. I was given a student on my second appt when Dr. Benjamin was supposed to be there and I was never notified. She didn't even do any internal check. Just tried again for our whole time to convince me to get a nerve block and told me how great Amy Benjamin was. The medical hubris is unreal. Cost a fortune to be demoralized.

I have been dealing with chronic pelvic pain for a couple decades plus. Was almost going to Germany for surgery, which would have been a waste of time and money. After calling CAPP in Florida I learned about Dr.Howard. Dr.Benja.in was doing her fellowship with him at the time. Since his retirement, Dr. Benjamin has been the one I see. She is very sympathetic and concerned about my health. I drive 263 miles to see her. That's what a great Doctor she is.

I was poorly treated by Dr. Benjamin's office when I was in terrible chronic pain. The first time I called to make an appointment, the receptionist said they couldn't make an appointment for me until they received my records from my physical therapist, but as soon they received my records, they'd send me a questionnaire to fill out, and only after they got my completed questionnaire would they call me to make an appointment. Ok. I called my PT right away and they faxed my records over. When I didn't hear from Dr. Benjamin's office, I called to make sure my records arrived. They said yes, they had my records, but the person who did the scheduling just got back from vacation and was behind, so it might "be a while." I waited. No questionnaire. So I called back a third time, and the worker who answered said we don't have your records! At this point I was weeping on the phone, trying to explain to her that I was in pain every day, had been for many months, physical therapy wasn't… working, and I needed to see a pelvic floor pain specialist ASAP. I knew my records had been sent -- couldn't she make me an appointment now, and I would have them faxed again that very day? No, they could not. At this point, I was crying and could barely get words out. I admit I used the F word when she said they didn't have my records, but it wasn't directed at her. Understandably, she hung up on me. I get it. So I had my records faxed a second time to Dr. Benjamin's office and again I waited. No questionnaire arrived. Finally I called back a FOURTH TIME and got the same woman of the phone. She said Dr. Benjamin wasn't going to treat me because I used the big F word on the phone. They didn't even have the decency to call me to tell me this -- they were just going to let me wait in pain. This is unethical. I wonder what words Rhonda would use if she felt like someone was repeatedly stabbing her pelvic floor all day, every day, for months, and kept telling her help was on the way, but just kept stabbing her. If you're so fragile you can't stand to hear the F-word from a weeping patient --whose records YOU have misplaced, and who is clearly desperate, maybe you shouldn't be working in a pelvic pain clinic. I don't blame the receptionist, I blame Dr. Benjamin's office for not properly training their staff to deal with people in chronic pain. Quality care and compassion is management's responsibility. I wouldn't see Dr. Benjamin now if they paid me to do so.

The first time I saw Dr. Benjamin i was completely turned off by her horrible bed side manner. She seemed to get better & then a few months later she was beyond insulting to me while my mother was in the exam room. She said "you only cry when you want to see me". Not only was i offended, but my mother & another doctor in the room were too. I don't know how anyone can give her positive reviews. My first interaction with me, she told me that I didn't handle my injections well & that I can't handle many at all. Other doctors at this practice are wonderful & I don't have any issues with them. I personally think she's a horrible doctor who doesn't actually care about her patients at all. I've had nurses agree with me on this. I have a 6 inch needle plunged into my lower abdomen anywhere from 10-17 times, obviously this is not a comfortable procedure & I do not cry for these injections often, only when I'm in a significant flare up of my condition. I wish I could say even more… negative things about her, but I am trying to be pleasant here.

She seemed to pride herself on being different, and also kind of rude and abrupt, which would have been fine if I thought she actually helped me, but she did not. I did not feel like she really listened, understood the pain/problems I was having, or cared. I did not go back.

If you have other medical problems besides pelvic issues ..Goodluck .. Dr Benjamin is judgemental & won't take anytime to research your medical chart, no bedside matter, and will drop you in a second ,without coming to you first, if she suspects any doubt. Never been questioned by another Doc before until her... Plenty of other good Docs out there that can do the same thing!!

Dr. Pratt is an excellent Doctor, she may not be warm and fuzzy but she is personable and I am able to talk to her about anything. She has helped me transition from Dr. Fred Howard to her with ease and fights for my health and well being throughout my illness. I'd be lost without her!!! the entire staff is great.

I have to agree her bedside manner is not good at all. She is a surgeon and likes to cut. She is an excellent surgeon so I guess the bad bedside manners make up for it. I just think when you have endometriosis you really need that doctor who is caring and a excellent surgeon. I have not found that as of yet. Yes 3 surgeries later.

I was sent there by my OBGYN to see a specialist due to severe menstraul cramps and other OB issues. Dr Benjamin was very thorough with doing test to determine what was wrong with me. She always had time to talk and help me in any way I needed. She will be my OBGYN forever.
