I went to see this doctor to get long term birth control. I was mostly interested in Tubal Ligation. I am 28, have had two children, and have no interest in having another child. When I told the doctor this, she was condescending and told me that I am too young to make such a permanent decision... Allow me to repeat that. I am 28, and have two children and she refused to even discuss the permanent birth control I was interested in because she feels I am too young to make such decisions. I then mentioned the implant, as it is reliable, relatively easy to put in, and I have had an IUD implant failure in the past. However, she would not do that one either. She said that she simply does not do those. When I mentioned maybe referring me to somewhere that will, she refused. She said that there was no reason to do so. Instead she pushed me towards the IUD that she apparently favors. Not quite what I was wanting, but it'll do for now. I figured that if this one to fell out, I would find… another doctor that would do the one I wanted when my insurance switched in the new year. I was told to call them on the first day of my next period so that the IUD could be placed. The day arrives a month later, I call, and "We're so sorry, but the doctor is away on vacation and will not be back for another week. Just call us back at the beginning of your *next* period" This time I actually managed to get in for the IUD placement and was told when to come back for an ultrasound to make sure it was in the proper position. During the procedure, the doctor casually mentioned that the IUD would stop my period, which would have been nice to know before she was doing the procedure, but oh well, to late now. (I'm a little paranoid because of how much I do not want more children, so not having a period would make me take a pregnancy test every month) I made sure the appointment was scheduled, and was called on the day of the appointment to be told that they should not have scheduled me because they did not do those types of appointments on that day of the week. After arguing with the receptionist, I was able to go in for the ultrasound on a later day. After the ultrasound, I was told that I would not need to schedule an appointment for the results (I asked specifically about it). I was told all I would need to do is call back a few days later. So, I call on the specified day and am told that everything looks fine and that the IUD is in place and I should not need to continue using other birth control methods. YAY! THREE MONTHS LATER. Today in fact, I got a call from the doctor's office. The assistant called me and asked if I had ever called in to get my results from my ultrasound. I clarified that she was referring to the ultrasound that I had gotten three months prior, the results that I was told that everything is fine and that the IUD was in place and should be working effectively... She confirmed that that was the ultrasound she was referring to, but informed me that the IUD was *NOT* in the correct place and that I would need to have it removed and have a new one placed. Of course this upset me, and I proceeded to question the assistant about why I had been told that everything was fine when it in fact is not. I also questioned whether I should be concerned about any complications from the IUD not being placed properly other than accidental, undesired pregnancy. She simply kept repeating that I should use another method of birth control and asking me if I wanted to schedule an appointment. I requested to speak to the doctor and was told that the doctor was at lunch. I informed the assistant that since she seemed unable to answer my questions, I would need the doctor to call be back once she returned, so that I could determine if I needed to leave or ask for time off work to have the IUD removed. May have mentioned the word "malpractice." I got a call less than 15 minutes later. I guess the doctor was not actually at lunch. The doctor then proceeded to tell me all kinds of things about how the IUD works fine positioned as it is, and that the manufacturer insists on it being placed precisely and on the ultrasound to confirm, but that she has been doing this for X number of years and that they work fine even if they are not positioned as the manufacturer insists. She then told me that I do not need to have the IUD removed and a new one placed, she can simply push the current one up into the proper position. I questioned why I was given the wrong results, why her assistant said I needed to have it replaced and removed if I only needed it adjusted, and why the manufacturer would insist on precise positioning if it was not actually necessary. The doctor did not answer any of these questions fully. Brushing it off. I was told that she has two assistants, and she cannot be sure which one gave me the wrong results and that it would be useless to try to figure it out. She said that the assistant was speaking from past experience and what she has seen happen (which if it is true that the IUD simply needs to be adjusted, wouldn't the assistant know that from "past experience?"), and repeated the lines about the manufacturer insisting on the placement being precise, but it works anyway and she's been doing this for X number of years and they work fine when placed lower... Said that my period not coming should show me that it is in fact working, and when I told her that my period had *not* stopped coming, she simply repeated the lines about it working fine again. I am going to be looking for a doctor to remove Dr. Tamayo's IUD and go with the birth control I wanted in the first place. I would highly recommend that no one ever go to this doctor.
