Dr. Andy H Chen, MD

In medical school doctors are taught that if they hear hoof beats to think horses. I have rare conditions that doctors usually can't even pronounce so I have trauma from past experiences and now think when I hear doctors footsteps think mules not unicorns. So when my father had to go to the er repeatedly for urinary tract infections and prostatis I dreaded it. Dr. Chen saw my father a total of 4 times in 5 months. I studied medicine for 2 years before my conditions took my body over. He not only took the time to call me on a Friday night when the er is at its busiest, but used medical terms when I asked. Not only that , but he didn't charge my father one time before his insurance kicked in as it all started 2 months before hand. He also called with the results of the culture instead of his nurse. He spoke to my father in simple terms that my dad could understand while being empathetic and brilliant at the same time. So that is why Dr. Chen is a purple unicorn doctor. His… attitude has put me at a bit more ease as pertains to my own surgery coming up next year because I can always remind myself that there are doctors like him out there caring for people even with all of the red tape of insurance and the other burdens an emergency doctor experiences. And sharing my experiences with my community has given multiple people the strength to go back out and get the surgeries they are so afraid of getting after bad experiences. To have a big heart and a brilliant mind at the same time with such a stressful job is amazing. He is the exemplification of what every doctor should attempt to be. I hope he continues to inspire his patients, medical school students, and interns because the USA needs more like him.
