Dr. Angelina Kay Gangestad, MD

I had a terrible experience going into Angelina Gangestad, MD's office at UH. Everybody, including receptionist, nurse and provider, looked like they were on a rush and were trying to communicate with me in the fastest and shortest way possible. Receptionist treated me okay, not warm but also not disrespectful. Waited for more than 15 minutes to get in. The nurse that talked to me at first also was not rude or disrespectful, but did not look at me when asking the primary questions (medications, alcohol use etc), not even when she asked me if I was not safe at home - I am, but if I wasn't, I wouldn't have felt comfortable or safe telling her, considering the lack of eye contact and very short and fast communication style while asking the questions. Now, about the physician who saw me - Dr. Gangestad - it was by far the worst OB/Gyn experience I have ever had in my entire life. She didn't ask me anything about my health. Didn't ask if I was married, what I did for a living, family… history, my medical history, what kind of medication I take and for what, if I use substances, nothing at all. She got in, introduced herself, and said "I see you have endometriosis, tell me about that". She only wrote down the very basic stuff on my chart, and when I gave her additional information, she just nodded and didn't write it down. She examined me awfully, and it was an honestly traumatic experience. I warned her I feel pain with invasive pelvic exams, and she just said "you'll feel my hand here" before examining me directly. She did not check with me once if I was doing okay, did not ask me if I wanted to slow down, even after I warned her previously it would be painful for me and even when she saw I was uncomfortable. She then ordered me an ultrassound to check something, and when I suggested a different imaging exam, she dismissed me without explaining why she wanted the ultrassound first. I didn't feel heard at all. We discussed a little about birth control options, but it was a very superficial discussion. And also, very importantly - I went for a check up and a pap smear. She didn't collect a pap smear because she was late on her shcedule and left the room without letting me know if she would collect that later on. It was such a quick, rushed and dismissive visit that I got kind of lost. She did not give me any space to ask additional questions or bring up other concerns, and when she was done she just kind of got up, said bye and left. Not even a "stay warm", "nice to meet you", nothing. I was so lost in what had just happened that I left the visit and had to actually come back to the recepctionist desk to ask what was going to happen next, when would I get my pap smear, when and where I could do the ultrassound and lab work. I expect warmer and nicer behavior from my doctors, more interest in my life and things that might be worrying me about my health.

Her approach was rough and uncaring. Didn't seem interested in my background/story/trauma. Had little concern about my pain level during exam. Young and immature nurse had the personality of a doorknob and seemed better suited to stock shelves at a warehouse than deal with patients.

She's the best

I had Dr. Gangestad for many years and I just loved her. She was always very nice to me and so was her staff. Her office is very busy most days, but she was absolutely worth the wait. I had many issues, to say the least, and she always informed me of possible diagnoses, test results, my options, and--when asked and desperately needed--gave me her honest opinion. She is very smart and stays abreast of all of the newest techniques and medical research. I never left the office thinking I didn't understand something or needed more information. I simply adored her and hated to have to find another gynecologist specialist when I moved away.

Wait-time is shorter at her suburban office.

staff at Landerbook is great, staff at MacDonald are not. Dr. G is very sweet & undertanding, but sometimes the wait to see her is very long. She has good & bad days - on a good day, she's excellent. On a bad day - she's "good", a little disorganized?
