Dr. Anne Burdeshaw Shrout, MD

I 100% recommend Dr. Shrout. She was very attentive, kind and most importantly, knowledgeable. I'm the person to read reviews across different platforms and I'm not understanding how she doesn't have 5 stars. I was apprehensive about going to a doctor at CWC versus a small practice because of issues I've had in the past but this was completely different. I felt like we were having a conversation when talking about my history and nothing was rushed. Tons of eye contact, recommendations for next steps and she made me feel very comfortable.

Always nice, answers all my questions, and does her best to make an uncomfortable appointment as comfortable and easy as is possible.

I have been a patient of Dr. Shrout's for about 5 years and followed her from her previous practice to her current practice at Capital Women's Care. OVERVIEW Dr. Shrout is a top OB/GYN, especially if you are a high risk case. She balances over-interventions with appropriate care and concern, and gives plenty of time to discuss all of your concerns and speaks to you in a way that is compassionate and helps you understand complicated medical conditions. I have been treated by some of the best providers in the county (I am a doctor snob) and she is literally one of the best in the DC Metro area if you are looking for someone who will balance your desire for limited intervention but also with the best interests of you and your baby. I owe my 2 year old daughter's life to her! OFFICE I agree with other reviewers---the office staff is inconsistent, unreliable, and uncommunicative. This has led to some serious issues for me, until Dr. Shrout was notified and intervened on my… behalf. However, this review is for Dr. Shrout, not her practice. Ultimately, I think Dr. Shrout is amazing, and that is why I endure rude and incompetent staff--to continue with her amazing care. Plan to wait a long time and you will need to be assertive to get to her. However, if her staff actually passes along a message, she is very prompt with responses. Talk to Jackie or Jan--both of whom are very helpful in the practice. Sonographers in the practice are also excellent, as is the practice's equipment--all very new--which is important to me. MEDICAL CARE Dr. Shrout provides GYN care and OB care to me over the last 5 years (my daughter and my current pregnancy). With my daughter, she provided pre conception counseling to my husband and me, since I had a high risk pregnancy previously (my 6 year old son) and had a history of miscarriages. She listened to my medical history, did and exam, and kept my husband included in the conversation. She provided accurate advice and helped me conceive my daughter. My daughter was also a high risk pregnancy. Dr. Shrout provided continuity of care throughout my pregnancy, consulted experts as needed (MFM, liver specialist), and ultimately coordinated my care in a knowledgable, compassionate, and thorough manner. Dr. Shrout was able to accommodate my requests, even coming to Shady Grove hospital to manage my induction and delivery (her practice only delivers at Holy Cross). Also, my first child was delivered 6 weeks early due to pre term labor and major complications. Dr. Shrout was able to work with my MFM to get my daughter close to term so she did not have to go to the NICU like my son!!! In addition to providing virtually all of my care, she also delivered my daughter. At 5 cm, my daughter turned and became transverse (sideways), which many providers would force a C-section. I was very clear with Dr. Shrout that I did NOT want a C section. She was aware that my son was delivered 6 weeks early and went straight to the NICU and I missed the opportunity to hold him and nurse him right after delivery. She heard my concerns, and proposed a solution that would be safe for me and the baby, and still try to accommodate my desire to have a vaginal birth. She would try to vert (turn) the baby to a head down position, but would do so in the OR so that if something went wrong, she could do a C-section. I thought this was a very creative solution, and ultimately, she was able to turn my daughter to a head-down position in less than 15 sections! She strapped a "girdle" on me and sent me back to L&D to finish laboring, and with two pushes, she delivered my perfectly healthy daughter. HIGH RISK CARE I highly recommend Dr. Shrout for high risk patients. She is exceptional when it comes to managing multiple complications while still trying to intervene as little as needed, opting to watch and observe progression of symptoms rather than just prescribe medications or procedures that may be unnecessary. She is able to explain risks and benefits in a way that is easy to understand and coordinates very well with multiple specialists. This is CRITICAL to high risk patients. She has an exceptional reputation at Shady Grove and Holy Cross hospitals among the doctors and nursing staffs. I find that this is very important. In fact, I receive better treatment from MFMs, nurses and other staff as an inpatient at Shady Grove or Holy Cross BECAUSE they like and respect her so much. BEDSIDE MANNER Dr. Shrout is upbeat, knowledgeable, efficient and compassionate. She really cares about not only you as a patient, but about your family. She tries to understand your demographic information (are you working, do you have other children at home, etc) and keeps your spouse or other family members involved and included in the conversation. When my kids have to tag along to appointments, she always treats them kindly and warmly. Dr. Shrout understands your pain and doesn't dismiss any small question. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Shrout for GYN and OB care.

All I can say is I told her what I thought I had and she looked at me like I was crazy and said "you don't have that". 2 mths. later I was diagnosed by another Dr. with you got it...with what I thought I had! Need surgery and this could have been done already instead of this month Oct/Nov. If you see her and think you have something else, all I can tell you is get a second opinion and follow your heart!

Dr. Shrout takes my insurance and had a very nice manner during the visit. She listened and was understanding. However, there is virtually no follow up after a visit even when that is called for. Getting messages to her is a frustrating process with apathetic and impatient office staff handling the calls and having to go through the nurse who then is supposed to gatekeep the message to the doctor. In spite of the online patient account, follow up is virtually non-existent and even a request to tweak a medication requires a separate office visit which is costly and uneccessary with good communication between doctor and patient. I still have not heard back from the doctor directly. Also, you really need to do your own research on what might work for your personal health goals as being a passive recipient of standard medical care does not always achieve serve you best as a patient. While I was initially pleased to be in Dr. Shrout's care, and the practice takes insurance, the… approach is impersonal and I don't feel that communication and follow up is an important priority. With the blackout dates when she is not in the office and the lack of priority to returning calls, I feel like a number, hopefully not a statistic.

I had an opportunity with meeting all the physicians but Dr shrout was exceptional.she exhibited a great deal of professionalism when meeting with me.she has a great smile and spent alot of time explaining every aspect of my treatment with much details.I am a patient with high risk pregnancy but the way I was treated at capital Womens care.I felt cared for.Good job Dr.shrout and keep up the good work.I will definitely recommend her to any one looking for a good ob/gyn.

great visit. I had bladder prolapse and stress incontinence and Dr Shrout was wonderful. She evaluated me thoroughly, did a sling on me, followed me through the recovery closely. Now I'm feeling great and dry. I can even play golf. I love her!

I have only good things to say about Dr. Shrout. She is very friendly, caring, knowledgeable (at least as far as I can tell), give you the necessary information to take decisions without overwhelming you with unnecessary details. I was seing her as part of a group of physicians during my first pregancy. For my second, I requested to exclusively deal with her, as I fully trust her.
