Dr. Annemieke Mattanja Austin, MD

I was a primary care patient of Dr. Austin's for three years. During those three years, I reported several times swelling and extreme fatigue. She told me that I was anxious and depressed with very little interaction with me or background. During my final visit with Dr. Austin, I had extremely high blood pressure and was in a hypertensive crisis. She told me that I had "white coat syndrome" and told me "I didn't go to the doctor when I was your age." She ignored the hypertensive crisis, told me I was probably anxious, and sent me on my way with no help or instruction. Weeks after that visit, I was in the emergency department, diagnosed with kidney failure with blood pressure so high I could have a stroke at any moment. If I didn't get help, I would have died in my sleep that evening most likely. Dr. Austin's "holistic" and "functional" way of practicing medicine failed to recognize that a healthy woman in her 20s with serious systems is NOT always "anxiety" and is often a very serious… medical issue that needs to be treated medically, not by suggesting a diet. Dr. Austin's failure to diagnosis me and treat me was completely negligent. For the record, I was put on kidney dialysis immediately after my diagnosis. The doctors there explained to me that they would never let a patient leave with that high of blood pressure and seconded my opinion that Dr. Austin was negligent. Dr. Austin did not treat my symptoms, she chose to read them as "anxiety" and "prescribe" me a book by conspiracy theorist, Kelly Brogan. Choose a different doctor. Not Dr. Austin.
