Anthony M. Avellino, MD, MBA, FACS is the director of UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute located at the new Ninth and Jefferson building across from Harborview Medical Center. Dr. Avellino is Professor of Neurological Surgery and Professor of Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is an attending neurosurgeon at Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Childrens Hospital. He received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Seattle Childrens Hospital. Avellino has special expertise in minimally invasive endoscopic neurosurgery, complex spine problems, brain and spinal cord tumors, and hydrocephalus. Avellino is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons, American Association of Neurosurgeons and the Society for Research into Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida; he is also active in several Washington state medical organizations. He serves as editorial board member for the journals Pediatric Neurosurgery and Cerebrospinal Fluid Research. Avellino has directed multiple courses on neuro-endoscopy for residents and faculty. His research interests focus on investigations in the pathophysiology of hydrocephalus using proteomic and genomic techniques, and identifying biomarkers for the prognosis of cognitive outcome in hydrocephalus. Avellino is widely published and frequently serves as a guest lecturer.
