A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
He or she can not only provide the counseling necessary to both diagnose and treat a patient, but can also prescribe medication when needed. In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.
- Addiction Medicine
An addiction medicine specialist is a doctor who treats patients with addictions to substances like drugs and alcohol or, in some cases, behaviors like gambling. Many of these specialists also treat the diseases that stem from these addictions.

In 1987 my father was a patient at St. Vincent's hospital, NYC in the Coleman pavilion( Psychiatric Unit) My father had a history of mental Illness diagnosed with Paronoid Schizophrenia from a young age. My Dad was admitted after a break down and was off of his medication. At the time they found my father to be Hypothyroid, to a point that it was untreated for years and it was felt that he could have died from complications of not being treated. So the staff at St Vincent's were hopeful after being treated for the thyroid disorder and medication, that my Dad would come back to a functioning state. After a few months at St Vincent's it was obvious he wasn't going to come back to be a normal functioning person. His discharge from the hospital was a Plan for my father to be discharged to his sister to care for him. He was discharged to my aunt and he was given a sesame based shot of Haldol which was to be administered Monthly. My dad's reaction to the shot was horrible, physically and mentally his whole status changed for the worst. Calls to the hospital and staff left us with referrals to a doctor, but the damage was done. My aunt brought my dad back to St. Vincent's and he was admitted again. This is when everything changed Dr Holt who was my father's psychatrist demeanor and manner had changed. They had felt my father was a candidate for a long term mental hospital. My brother was hospitalized since he was young for mental retardation at Creedmore State Hospital and I was very aware what State hospital's were like in NYC in the 70's and 80's and they were horrible. I was told this was my only option. When I asked for a patient advocate I was told he did indeed have a Patient advocate who was a attorney who was provided by the appellate court. I was told the attorney was also in favor for a state hospital. I had asked for Adult homes or nursing homes but I was told they were not a option. I was told the patient advocate(attorney) was the one pushing for a state institution. Before this hospitalization, my Dad was a Operating Engineer who functioned normaly under medication. I was floored by these recommendations on this second admission because during the first admission the worst case scenario was a adult home or at worst case a nursing home. The whole demeanor towards my father had changed hopefulness turned to hopeless. Dr Roland Holt became adversarial when I brought up other options besides the State Mental hospital. I could not describe the change in everyone at the hospital but Dr Holt was really the one leading the process to get my Dad placed in the State Institution . I could not understand why other than they felt the first discharge was a liability now. So since I would not agree with the discharge recommendation, my father was scheduled for a compency hearing. The day before the hearing His attorney (patient Advocate) called me. The attorney wanted to know why I was pushing to have my father placed in state institution. Dr holt had lied to me about the attorney's recommendation. Dr Holt who had full control of what would happen to my dad had lied to me about the attorneys recommendation to place him in a state hospital and he lied to the attorney about my recommendation to keep him out ,he lied to both of us behind our backs ,my father went to his hearing and lost and was placed in a state hospital where he suffered multiple beatings in a ward that was meant for the criminally insane .I was 20 years old at that time I am now 47 and am a retired NYC firefighter ,what Dr Roland Holt"s motives where are still unknown to me I feel that Dr Holt should have been charged criminally for what he did to my father . The memories of my fathers hospitalization will stay with me till the day i die . If I was older I would have had the knowledge and capabilities to get Dr Holt charged but at that time I didn't know what to do other than save my fathers life
