A few weeks ago, on an early Saturday afternoon I took my wife to ER at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland for what we believed to be a straightforward appendectomy. What transpired was anything but what we expected, and the surgeon on-call, Avishai Meyer, thankfully, was all we could have hoped for and more. After extensive examinations and test, surgery began late Saturday night. An hour or less became a little over three hours. Early Sunday morning, about two hours in, he dispatched a nurse to update me. I was then sole occupant of the surgery waiting room and growing alarmed. After the surgery he came out and calmly explained in detail what he’d found, what he’d done and why, how recovery would be impacted and what we could expect. In the hospital for over a week he visited every day. When pathology and a biopsy revealed additional challenges, he met with us late one night giving us the news professionally and compassionately. Unhurried, I truly felt he was there for… us. Upon discharge is where he might have said goodbye and good luck, but his commitment to my wife didn’t end. Behind the scenes he was assembling a team of experts, surgeons and an oncologist, taking a caring proactive hand in a future we knew wouldn’t be easy. My point is what he did allowed us to believe, even at the outset, that a happy ending was possible, and we wouldn’t be alone in finding it. Highly recommended for professional skill and humanity, sensitivity and genuine caring.
