Dr. Barry Alan Benowitz, MD

Dr. Benowitz got right down to figuring out what was going on with me. He did thorough testing to make sure he wasn't missing anything, took the time to explain the results, and is always willing to listen to my concerns and answer my questions. He won't sugar coat anything, so if you're sensitive about being overweight or the fact that you don't exercise, he might hurt your feeling by telling you how to be healthier. My concern going to see him wasn't to be told how great I am, it was resolving my health issues. I'm grateful he works hard to educate me on the issues. I'll be going back to him for as long as I have this health concern.

Dr. Benowtiz was the worst experience I have ever had with a physician. His personal style is abrupt, rude, judgmental, demeaning, and dismissive. He refused to listen to me, did not acknowledge my legitimate concerns, refused to allow me to see any test results, reached a superficial and meaningless diagnosis, and gave me advice I could have got from a shoe salesman. Further, because I saw him before my annual deductible had been paid, he required a cash payment of several hundred dollars and would not have returned the overcharge except that I finally complained and--by inquiring several months later of the other doctor he had referred me to--inadvertently embarrassed him before his colleagues. His staff were pleasant but seemed intimidated by him. I felt battered and abused by him, and I will never allow anyone I care about to interact with him--much less to ask him for health care.

He had me disrobe for a routine thyroid exam...NO ONE has ever asked me to do this in 30+ years with thyroid disease. He had my friend do the same thing, Strange. He should not be practicing medicine.

I'm a diabetic, and my AC one is 5.6. Dr. Benowitz would not see me because I did not take insulin day and night. I told him that I took insulin when I needed it. so he didn't feel that I was regulated enough and he wouldn't see me as a diabetic.He would not help me as a diabetic so. far as I'm concerned he's a quack.

This physician took the time to work us into his busy days. He worked very hard trying come up with a dx that can be fixed. He even called me at home to give me his final dx.

While Dr. Benowitz did a gazillion tests, I'm not sure he ever came up with a diagnosis; after a couple of years, my symptoms went away. His bedside manner sucked. His reputation for his experience and knowledge made me stick with it for quite a while. Then, I began getting billing charges that didn't make sense. His office staff refused to discuss it beyond saying, in effect, "just pay your bill, loser."

At first he was great. The next visit, he became rude and belittled me. After that, he refused to give me a copy of my bloodwork for my personal records! Paranoid doctor assumed I was going somewhere else. I wasn't then, but I sure will be now!

Dr. Benowitz has done a great job managing my care -- he takes the time to talk with me and is on top of the latest research.
