Dr. Bennett Winston Yu, MD

Dr Yu was the oncologist on staff just long enough to take care of me. I came into the ER at University Hospital's Good Samaritan in Ashland Ohio April 13, 2023. I had pneumonia and a tumor the size of an apple in my upper right lung. I don't think Dr Yu was even on staff at that point but by the time I needed him he was there. My first appointment with him I thought he was rude, he was late and I didn't feel we were going to have a good working relationship but I was wrong. I think he does have a problem with time management but in the big scheme of things it's a minor inconvenience. His bedside manor isn't the best but I advocated for myself. I took notes and had listed my questions I needed answered. The first visit he acted like I was irritating him by asking questions. I simply told him this is my health, my life and I wasn't the one who was late! I asked him what he wanted me to do, not ask questions? He wanted my husband at the visits which felt misogynistic to me but fine I had… my husband come with me. After that visit he was still late but would come into the room ready to answer my questions and not rush me. He is very focused on the science side of the treatment, he explained to us I was lucky because this protocol had just been approved by the FDA. Dr Yu presented my case to the Tumor Board because the surgeon had an unexpected family obligation. Dr Yu discussed my case with Dr Towe and Dr Yu did a peer to peer review after the insurance company denied a procedure. Thankfully the insurance company did approve the treatment after listening to Dr Yu. I felt like I got the very best treatment from Dr Yu and the team of Doctors and nurses with UH. Dr Yu told me he hoped the treatment would shrink the tumor by 30%. After the final infusion a scan showed a reduction of 50%! He was very happy with my body's response to the treatment. I was very happy and hopeful. My surgery was Sept 15, 2023. Dr Towe told us the tumor was completely eviscerated, there was no form left to it! Dr Yu had hoped for a 30% reduction but it was 100% reduced! I wasn't able to thank him because the day before my follow-up appointment he was gone! My treatments began with a stage 3 adenocarcinoma and ended with surgery at 0 cancer in 5 months! I would highly recommend Dr Yu for oncology treatment. Look past his bedside manner just be firm and bring a book or play a game while you wait for him. The end result is what matters. He is probably trying to figure out something that is saving somebody's life with that extra time.

This is the worst Dr I have ever seen. Just diagnosed with cancer and he kept us waiting an hour and a half. Then comes in and says he hasn’t read my file/records yet. Knew nothing about me. Told me no questions allowed until the end, had the audacity to rudely tell my husband “I think I have already answered this question” although he had misunderstood the question and spoke over me. Has zero compassion. Appears irritated at every question and then said “ok this is your consultation” (meaning your time is up) and stood up to leave. Appalled… CTCA was a good experience up until this point!

I wish I would've read the reviews before meeting with this doctor. I've had a chronic illness for over 10 years and never have I meet a doctor so rude. He comes in real quick to tell me I kinda know why you're here but I need to read over your chart. I can hear him having a casual conversation outside the door. It takes him almost an hour to come back into the room. He comes into the room and says you've had swollen lymph nodes for almost 10 years. I said no, since last year. As I try to explain my symptoms, he keeps cutting me off or over-talking me. He never really listens to my concerns. He does an exam and I'm trying to show him the hard fixed lump I can feel getting bigger under my armpit. He makes a sound as if I’m bothering him. Tells me to put on a gown. He comes back in and says I'm not impressed with the lymph nodes I can feel and tells me I don't need any bloodwork or imaging and to get dressed. I had to tell him you haven't done my breast exam. He does the breast exam… quickly and didn't give me a chance to show him where I feel a lump. He tells me I don't need to follow up with him and to go back to my rheumatologist that he seems to think has me on a wild goose chase. Breast cancer runs deep in my family and this doctor didn't seem to been concerned about it. If you know something isn't right, advocate for your health. I will be finding another doctor that cares about what I have to say.

I meet Dr Yu at CTCA, a professional and knowledgeable doctor, I love how he treated me

Very stoic and condescending. Waited for over 2hrs for 15min of his time for which was pointless.

First, he arrived at the clinic 45 minutes after the time of the appointment and had not yet read any of the medical reports about my case. In a few minutes upon arrival, popped in to the medical exam room to ask one or two questions, then let us know he was going to study/read my medical history and previous tests and prognoses for my case. Another 45 minutes passed, he came in, was in a hurry, asked some more questions, and left to read more. He was focused on radiation for a different part of my body, which is not what I came for; I needed chemo only. He raised his voice more than once when I could not hear. He really was not focused on any information I supplied, and kept going on a different tangent.

Terrible bedside manner.

I was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer. Two other oncologists send me to other doctors/hospitals for second opinions because they "did not know how to treat" my cancer. Dr. Yu took my case and through some tough chemo, arrested the cancer. I am now in remission and would not be here without him. Knowledgeable, caring, honest and no window dressing - he tells it like it is, and includes you in every treatment decision. If I could give him 10 starts I would.

I would not employ this doctor. Not if you want to live. At best, I was treated like a number, at worst an inconvenience. Has no compassion. May be knowledgeable but if you want a doctor who cares, he is not the guy.

Dr. Bennett Yu saved my life! He is a very caring and compassionate doctor. He took as much time with me as I needed or wanted. I have the utmost respect for him!
