The first thing I notice about Dr Prum is his abruptness and abrasiveness. I've been seeing him for a few years, and although I think his "bedside manner" has improved a little in that time, I am getting to the point where I'm seriously considering changing doctors. I have been cared for by exceptionally talented ophthalmologists in the past who have much better people/patient skills than Dr. Prum does. Although Dr Prum has not performed surgery on me so that I cannot review this aspect of his skill first hand, his abruptness is a real turn off and honestly, should I ever need surgery, I would seek someone other than Dr Prum to do it. He spends less than 15 minutes with me in an appointment, which is fine, but the vast majority of the time I leave feeling irritated at him. All specialists are under a lot of stress. Some deal with it better than others. I've been to many ophthalmologists in my life, and a very small minority have had worse people skills than Dr Prum. His abrasiveness overshadows his skill IMO.
I have been seeing Dr. Prum for about 5 years now. I drive 3 hours one way for my visits. Genius persons are often difficult, Dr. Prum is not a outgoing person, but I already have a best friend. He is extremely gifted at his job. He has performed 4 procedures on me, and I don't think we are finished yet. I have trust in his education and skill, which I find is unmatched anywhere on the East Coast. Perhaps a little more patient education is warranted in many cases.
This was my first visit to Dr. Prum and it will be my last! He was extremely abrupt with me to the point of being very rude! He would not let me even get a word in edge-wise. I have a complex issue, and he expressed no compassion towards me what-so-ever! He even went as far as to say that he was not the doctor for me which gave me no confidence in his skill-level at all! And then he proceeded to schedule me for a very delicate eye surgery. What gall this doctor has! I found him to be very abrasive!
Some patients have a poor understanding of the pressure Dr. Prum must live with in his clinic at UVA. He is highly credentialed and his expertise is well known, thus he has many referrals for the specialized conditions he treats. He was trained at Dartmouth, Yale, and Duke, all "four-star" institutions. The nature of his specializations means that many of his patients are senior and elderly. Thus appointments are often forgotten or there is confusion regarding the date and time of appointments, etc. In my experience, Dr. Prum and his staff always work people in, even those who are indignant that they are not put first on the list, despite appearing in the clinic on the wrong date and at the wrong time, compared to when time was reserved for them (their appointment times). I have been present in the clinic and observed all this. Dr. Prum's "chair-side manner" may seem abrupt. But while he does not have a "coddling personality," he is focused on finding the correct diagnosis and most appropriate treatment. I am a patient of his and have seen him for two different complicated conditions for the past nine years. Thus I have had the opportunity to observe many patients in his clinic and under his care. Dr. Bruce Prum deserves an excellent rating.
