Dr. Gumuscu joined the division in December 2012 as a physician scientist with a focus on hematopoietic and cancer stem cell research. Prior to joining the University of Florida, he studied mechanisms of naive T-cell biology that regulate T-cell reconstitution following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as a research fellow at the laboratory of Dr. Ronald Gress, at the National Institute of Health (NIH/NCI-ETIB). His research at the UF focuses on defining the acute myeloid leukemia (AML) stem cell niche. His project will address how AML stem cells interact with supporting cells within the bone marrow, the bone marrow niche. By understanding the biology of the leukemia microenvironment, Dr. Gumuscu can develop new methods to treat childhood leukemia. He will be working closely with Dr. Edward Scott, director of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, who is an internationally known expert in the field of stem cell biology.
