Dr. Charlotte Jane Sumner, MD

My husband and I traveled to see Dr. Sumner, after I had lumbar surgery and suffered from pain, weakness, and atrophy of my thigh, buttock, adductor, and calf muscles. She kept interrupting and would not listen to anything I had to say. She offered no EMG test, but said she would come up with a diagnosis and get back with me. After waiting six weeks, I left two messages for her. She finally called me back with a diagnosis that did not match up with my symptoms. Now, after having to go somewhere else, I have been diagnosed with a peripheral neuropathy and nerve injury, which was what I ask Dr. Sumner about. If you need help and have to travel, don't waste your time on Dr. Sumner.

I came to Johns Hopkins Neurology through their second opinion system. I was assigned to Dr. Sumner, and am exceptionally pleased with the experience. She came to my appointment well prepared, having read my history. She asked many questions, and explored some areas of my personal and family history in depth that had not seemed to be important previously. She then conducted a very thorough physical examination, again, identifying some areas that had not been previously raised. Her communication style is very clear, honest and understandable. She spent over an hour with me, and at the end, provided her assessment and identified the key next steps to be taken, which included an EMG that was scheduled for later that same day. She has been very prompt in following up on her commitments, which include sharing my case with one of her colleagues with a particular interest in my condition. While it took some time to get the appointment, it was well worth the wait and the effort for me to… travel 2 hours to see Dr. Sumner, and I highly recommend her to anyone with a neuromuscular condition.
