Dr. Christian B Rutland has the following 3 specialties
A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
He or she can not only provide the counseling necessary to both diagnose and treat a patient, but can also prescribe medication when needed. In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.
- Addiction Medicine
An addiction medicine specialist is a doctor who treats patients with addictions to substances like drugs and alcohol or, in some cases, behaviors like gambling. Many of these specialists also treat the diseases that stem from these addictions.
These physicians are specially trained to prevent and treat the disease of addiction via psychiatric means, or other fields of medicine like family or internal medicine.
A neurologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system which is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These doctors do not perform surgery, but refer patients to neurological surgeons when they determine that surgical intervention is necessary.
Some of the conditions that neurologists diagnose and treat are epilepsy, aneurysms, hydrocephalus, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal disc herniation, and spinal disease.
In addition to using diagnostic tests like MRI, CT scans, EEG and EMG, neurologists also employ neurological testing to gauge muscle strength and movement, balance, reflexes, sensation, memory, speech, and other cognitive abilities.

My son has been seeing Dr. Rutland off and on for about 4 years. He is a very knowledgable and compassionate man. He admitted my son when we thought that perhaps his symptoms were from cutting back on his psych meds. It turned out that he needed emergency open heart surgery. Had my son not been admitted to Della Martin, his heart condition never would have been diagnosed in time and he would have died. Recently Dr. Rutland went above and beyond when we were in a crisis. Details aren't important, but I know without Dr. Rutland we would not have our son today. As far as Estelle, his receptionist, I have always had a very good relationship with her. She and Dr. Rutland have been a team for many years and she has always responded to all of our needs.
I've been a patient of Dr. Rutland's for the past 4 months and my experience has been excellent. I think he has a very caring and disarming bedside manner. He intently listens to your personal situation, genuinely seems to care and is very knowledgeable and compassionate. Yes, he is quite expensive ($200 for 30 mins), but if you can afford it, I believe it is money well spent since you can't put a price on effectively kicking an addiction. My main issue is actually a positive one; I enjoy talking to him to the degree that I need to try to stay on topic in the short appointment time. He's the kind of guy I'd love to have a coffee with and would enjoy talking to him for hours on topics completely unrelated to my treatment. He's a very bright and engaging person, in addition to being an excellent Psychiatrist . Regarding previous negative reviews about his office manager Estelle, I cannot speak against the validity of previous negative comments, but mine have all been purely positive. I find Estelle extremely capable and responsive when dealing with my pharmacy and, recently I needed a prior authorization which my pharmacy said they never received. She was so organized that she told me the day and exact time she sent it to them and immediately called them and resolved the issue within minutes, something I was unable to do. I also recently had to cancel on the day of an appointment and she kindly waived all fees and made me feel that it was not causing them any hassle. Furthermore, she has gone above and beyond when I've had various prescription issues due to my frequent travel which causes difficultly when trying to fill prescriptions in other states and Estelle has offered ways that they could help me out in my unique situation that I've really appreciated. My experience in a few words: Dr. Rutland is an exceptional Psychiatrist and Estelle is highly-capable and responsive office manager who goes above and beyond in helping patients when possible.
I have now been going to Dr Rutland for few years. He is expensive but knowledgeable. So until now I was willing to deal with his very rude assistant, Estelle. She is probably the most obnoxious receptionist i ever encountered and very condescending. At 400 dollars a consultation and 200 for follow ups, I think Dr Rutland should have better staff greeting you. also Dr Rutland never returns phone calls. I have no idea if it is because she does not give him the messages or because he does not feel like it. If anyone needs TLC when they go to see their shrink it is definitely not the place to go.
