So, how are you feeling? I asked my son. There is some tingling on my fingertips, he answered. Mmh? Have you ever felt that before? I mean you just started taking some medication, perhaps it is something we need to ask Dr. Kye when we see him next week or if you really want to know you can send him an email and ask him too? The day came and on the long ride to my son’s appointment we knew there was one thing on our minds – the tingling. So, when we arrived, the strangest thing happened, Dr. Kye, in his straightforward yet calming voice asked my son: “So, how is it going? Are you adjusting to the side effects of the medication? Any tingling on the fingertips, toes, tongue?” Well, yeah! My son responded while I watched in amazement. How about soda? How is that tasting? Does it taste like metal? To which my son responded: is that what it is? Wow! Yes! I was beginning to think there was something wrong with sodas lately, my son said. Nope, Dr. Kye responded it is another side effect. But,… the question is, Dr. Kye continued: are you okay with that? Yes, my son said! Absolutely!
I guess the strangest thing is how we got here on the first place. My son had been diagnosed for various inherited illnesses, with permanent hospitalization diagnosis. But, not my son I thought. So, I kept him home and nurtured him for years, decades and at 28, things suddenly turned grimmer and during his last depression fall, there was no rescuing him. He began to talk repetitively and excessively. Dr. Kye called it obsessive thinking after our initial meeting. I knew about it, but never really thought it was a thing. I had lived in a bubble with my son for all these years and always looked forward to the day when he woke up and “it” (the repetitive talk) was suddenly gone and he was “back”
But not this time, my son plummeted to a depth he had never reached before after being diagnosed with COVID19, not once, but twice. On the third time his test came back negative, but his state was not good – the mandatory 14 day quarantine (twice) took a toll on him and I could tell just by looking at him the situation was worse. He looked very slim, in fact, when Dr. Kye weighted him the first time, it was confirmed, my son had lost over 20 pounds in less than two months and he was not sleeping. He did not want anyone around and spent the day under his blankets with his eyes wide open and a hoodie over his head. What kind of work do you do? Dr. Kye asked my son. I am a driver, my son said. In fact, unbeknown to Dr. Kye, my son had maintained a job and sometimes multiple seasonal jobs during the last 10 years. Then Dr. Kye melted my heart when he asked: “Is you son always this polite?” Yes, I said. His demeanor has always been like this.
Allright said Dr. Kye, give me three months! And if we are not in a better place by then, you can fire me, no, I will fire myself!
Actually, we did not have to wait three months. After one day of treatment my son was “back”. He has gotten two raises at his job and has not lost a day of work. He gets home and takes his bike out to play basketball every day (rain or shine). He goes out for sushi and is eating very well. He has not gained any weight, but is solid muscle. He wakes up alert and has incorporated into our family, once again. Watching the presidential debate has been an entirely different experience. So how does a fly land on a candidate’s head? It doesn’t really matter ~ what matters here is the jovial look on my son’s face. I guess bottom line, it is important to Dr. Kye too…. I know it because of what he asked my son just before we left: “take your mask off, let me see your smile!” ~ yes, I could see those pearly whites too, I thought, I see them every day now.
As a mother these visits are a tremendous financial sacrifice, but in the end I thought, I gotta keep trying, I gotta hope there is an answer out there. My prayers brought me here and this blessing kept my son alive!
